Thumping and rumbling and rattling suspension

Postby djandrey_M » Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:09 am

Just wondering about the following link: http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductList ... 93&PTSet=A

Cos I'm looking for strut mounts, and spring insulators, and this webpage is confusing me with all the things that are on there. There is like mounts with bearings and stuff, so I need guidance on this one cos I don't know what to buy.

i thought struts insulators already come with the strut mounts. i bought two new front ones from ebay with the bearings for like 80$ shipped. u better pay a couple of extra bucks (i think 20$) and get the bearing while you're at it... you wouldn't want to have to remove everything to change those bearings afterwards.

I thought the rubber piece inside the mounts is the insulator... so make sure you dont buy double

GL with all this

I've gotten used to that noise.... all my bushings are new energy suspension units, my coilovers are JIC, I adjusted them myself, and tightened them thoroughly. To this day there is clattering.

In case you might be wondering, and before anyone comes up with ideas....
Front balljoints, changed out about 6k ago when I put the new bushings in, as well as CV axles, which are new not rebuilt.
In the rear the bushings were done last year, I doubt they have gone bad since they are solid.

Checked all the hubs/bearing assemblies, and everything is within spec...

struts, strut mounts, and all assoicated hardware is nice and tight.

as for my noise, its only on abrupt changes on the surface, a common thing on NYC streets.
So my final resolution is that this is a normal sound for our Gen 1's.

JIC's will make the clattering noise. Mine does that its because it uses a ball joint for the strut mount and not bearings. Which is why they are so much stiffer and also the damping is stiff. You hear more road noise and not only that you feel every bump due to the design as well. Which is why some perfer the Tein CO over JIC. JIC was designed for track handling while TEIN and consumer comfort in mind.

But in the end I still like the JIC due to the adjustability they have and the chamber plate in front

I have done sim mods as you and I too have a weird noise from the suspension. If I stop and start hard I get a thunk and If I hit a bump just right I get that same thump. I have checked every bolts torque all up to spec but I can't get rid of that thunk.
