Thumping and rumbling and rattling suspension

Postby djandrey_M » Thu Sep 03, 2009 11:24 am

My suspension is making noises. Car has 76k on it (supposedly). Its got these rattles that are coming out of front right (i think). And also it thumps and rumbles loudly over certain bumps. I am thinking of replacing springs and struts with like Tein springs and Tokico struts. So should I consider replacing strut mounts too?

Try tightening up your strut mounting bolts (tops of the shocks), i believe 17mm, at the ends of the strut bar

the noise is most likely the strut mounts

I second this... Try tightening the bolts to see if it stops it. For whatever reason mine were making a horrible noise, i wrenched down on them and it fixed the noise. But i still would get new mounts, it might save you trouble down the road.

If you are going to put on new springs and shocks, don't skimp on the mounts. You might want to get new spring insulators as well. (the thin rubber part between the spring and strut) It is alot of work to get them out so it will save you time in the future.

also I would recomend Eibach springs.

Cool guys, it worked. I tightened those two big bolts on top of each one in the front, I think its better now. Tomorrow I will try to do the same to the rear.

I found some Teins on here, now I'm looking for some Tokicos and strut mounts for the entire car...cant wait to lower my ride.

Edit: lol I see Toy1mzfe is also looking for strut mounts ha ha.

Oh nice, where did you get them? I was thinking of Tokico, but KYB's are supposedly softer, so I think I should get those instead.

HERE'S A QUESTION TO ANYBODY WHO MAY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS:
Please help me out here. I purchased a Haynes repair manual for my Solara. It says "Toyota Camry 1997 thru 2001 All models includes Avalon, Solara & Lexus ES 300". So now I'm wondering: since they are all so compatible, could for example shocks for a '97 Camry be identical to those on my '99 Solara?

The reason I'm asking is I see plenty of like Tokicos and stuff for other cars like Camrys, so I was thinking what if those work on my car?

i got them off ebay. 260 shipped to my door no tax.

I read up alot on it and people like the reliability on the kybs. YEah, they are softer but then i heard the KYB last longer. Alot of people say that their tokico blows quickly. Not sure about the Solara guys but all other forums people suggest to stick with kyb's. So with all the comments and stuff i decides go with the kyb.

Ok, I found these KYB struts, it says Camry but doesn't mention Solara on them, so will they work on my Gen 1 Solara? Anybody know? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KYB-Gas- ... 619wt_1164

This is the price for all. I hope. Down there in the description it mentions front right/left and rear right/left. Alright, nice, I guess I'll be ordering those.

By the way, I already ordered a TRD RSB for a dealer in Cali, and got springs from toy1mzfe here, so yeah cant wait to get all those goodies and put them on. Wish me luck on installing all that crap, Imma try doing this myself.
