im stumped

Postby solara90 » Wed Sep 02, 2009 2:59 pm

so i have been fighting this for a while. I have a very inconsistent idle once warm. some times around 900 others round 750. when it idles lower it feels like its chugging during idle (but seems to be steady on my tach from what i can tell) Some times after i park i smell a gassy smell from the exhaust.

So far ive replaced spark plugs PCV valve cleaned throttle body along with the MAF.

No CEL's and i still average around 23-25mpg.

Im lost to where i should go from here?

I've had the same issue every now and again.

Check the IAC and the IAC VSV.

Also, check your fuel pressure and makesure the signal to and from the fuel pump is good.

it sounds like you have a vacuum issue somewhere. DO as jamesT suggested and make sure your intake manifold is tightened down

if its a vaccuum issue the only thing i can thing of would be the brake booster. Because if im in park there is no symptoms of it at all?

Suck it up, your four cylinder just idles rough when it idles low. The computer controls idle speed according to lots of parameters, including engine temp. and air temp. So if it seems to be faster or slower, it's probably just the computer telling the engine to idle at that speed. Even humidity can play a factor, as for the brake vs. Park thing, there is no load on the engine in park, so it will idle smoother and there is a load from the torque converter when you are sitting at a stop somewhere as well as the use of vacuum for the brake booster. I would bet thousands of dollars that you have nothing wrong with your car. As for the gassy smell, that is also normal, probably just the smell of your exhaust. Good Luck..........:drinking:

but it will be that different from one stop light to another?

and it never idled like this before been doing this for the past 3 or 4 months.

i guess im just a person that worrys a lot.. but i guess its better than not noticing what is happening with their car.

So many variable exist in the world, it's not that unlikely that your idle speed would be different from light to light. Think of it this way, the computer is reading dozens of parameters, hundreds of times a second, so even if you don't notice a change, the computer might. If the idle were erratic, like it jumped around when the car was just sitting than, yes I would think you have a problem, but if it is pretty solid then your alright. I notice that if I pull up behind a truck at a light, the hot, dirty exhaust getting sucked into my engine will cause the idle to change.

if could be related to a seal on the brake booster. If you think it's a major issue then take it to a toyota dealership you trust and let them do the troubleshooting, the only catch is that you will have to have them repair it or pay a steep diagnostic fee.

what is the benefits of using sea foam? What does it do?

i've had a similar problem with my car, with the idling, i cleaned the TB, MAF and everything i can think of, it still idles ~400 RPM lower than it did.

If it is only doing it when the pedal is pressed than your break booster is leaking for sure other signs of a leaking break booster are :when you turn the car off with your foot on the brake the pedal will rise by it self, also you may get a CEL for to lean and for me i could hear a hissing after i turned off the car there is no fixing a leaking break booster it will have to be replaced.pm me if you want more info
