I'm new to the 1mz, was poking around the net and found this, maybe it's been discussed before.

ToysRme post #25, anyone have any thoughts on this? Especially regarding "The 1mz-fe's that *have* blown up, were killed by:
1) The G D TRD supercharger, which is too small for a Miata, let alone an engine 50% larger with atleast the same volumetric effeciancy. It is too small, the flow is too hot, and the fueling is not up to par.
2) Poor tuning."

^Those who've been around here for a while are all well aware of Tony's work, as his car has become the stuff of legends. He's since moved back to a single turbo setup, as he felt he could extract better power as opposed to staying with the twins,

ok. i realize that everyone atleast know who tony is but what i dont get is, the fact that for 2k and getting your hands dirty, you can easily get more ponies out of the engines with a turbo.
I mean seriously. looking at the dyno sheets for the trd supercharged 1mz's gets Depressing considering all of the money some of our fellow solaraguys have put into them.
His first setup was hardly anything special and didnt require alot of money while running 10 psi/stock internals and 268hp to the WHEELS with knock sensor problems. he ran this setup for almost a year with no problems. the only reason he did the internals was cuz he wanted even more power.

This is off his website
268 HP @ wheels equals to approximately
340 HP at the Flywheel (22% Drivetrain loss from A/T)
Dyno Date: January 17, 2003
Setup Includes:
- Stock CT-26 Turbocharger @ 10psi
- Custom Intercooler
- 2.5" Turbo Down-pipe
- 2.0" Turbo Up-pipe
- 2.25" Exhaust (old exhaust)
- Apexi SAFC Piggyback
- Stock Catalytic Converter
- Stock Exhaust Headers
- Stock Auto Transmission with Levelten PTS Converter
- Stock injectors (Fuel Pressure at 60 psi)
- Stock MAF Sensor
- Engine Knock Sensor defect (5 deg BTDC Timing across powerband)

well because although the gains may be greater. that is a lot tougher to build for most people than say...just bolting on a blower.

Ok so I take it you know this Toysrme guy as 'Tony'... he basically stated the TRD SC is too small for a Miata engine which is 1/2 the size, is it the truth?

He also listed the Y-Pipe upgrade as one of the better 1mz performance mods, but I poked around a little... can anyone confirm this is a street-illegal mod in the USA/Canada?

Excuse my noobish-ness, trying to educate myself beyond changing my own oil/air filter and spark plugs =P Oh and I do my own wheels + brakes lol. I'm decent at car stereos though! =P

let's get a couple of things straight....

toysrme is NOT tony

tony's original build costed a lot more than 2K to do, even thought it built it himself

and yes, a y-pipe is a great performance mod for the 1mz and 3vz due to the restrictive design of the stock y-pipe

anyways

Postby NRDriver » Sat Aug 22, 2009 6:27 pm

i dont know how much his first setup cost him.
i have the t04e turbo. all of the intake piping, couplers, clamps, BOV, Regulator, oil lines already setup, huge a$$ intercooler already setup with piping, new air filter, 190 lb fuel pump, safcII, all for about 2100$. all i have to do is fit the intake and exhaust pipes(already have all the exhaust piping/flanges).

sounds good...

now post the exact model and brand of each part, as well as if they are new or used in addition to the price.

Tony's setup worked because he only uses reliable parts, and always new- as long as the part is reliable.

Same as how only a few mr2 guys have successfully turboed a 5sfe- putting out close to or over 200whp on a stock motor! But they were quality builds with all quality and new parts. Everybody else who has gone the cheap route and boosted their 5sfe for "a couple K" has quickly blown their motor.

parts

Postby NRDriver » Sat Aug 22, 2009 6:50 pm

you are correct but most of the money to build a custom setup is labor cost. your talking big bucks 90-100/hr with alot of trial and error. a rebuilt turbonetics turbo is as good as a new one( i dont care what you say). this stuff has taken along time for me to get cuz im waiting for the right deals to pop up. also, all the labor is done myself.

i believe tony started out with a USED toyota ct26a tubo. if you dont get a good tune your screwed from the start
