It shouldn't matter. While key is to acc hold odo in while you turn to on count to ten, relese odo, and then press it again.

I don't know about the beeping, I don't think its related to the 1-20

The only beeping my car does is if the key is in ing while door is open.

This is intriguing to me... mine was also set to 6
I will have to ask some of the techs I work with, I doubt they are going to know either but they may have some ideas.

mine is a 99 SE 4cyl Auto non-ABS w/cruise

It has to be something that all first gen Solara's have.
SE/SLE doesn't matter
5spd/auto ? probably not
ABS/non-ABS ? probably not
DRL/twilight sensor --all Solara's have this right??

Toyota must have put a lot of stock in that
odometer button and this is why I think so.
When my "maintenance" light stayed on after
starting the car one day, I checked my owner's manual
and it said I needed to change the oil. I'd just
changed the oil about 1000 miles ago, so I was
concerned. I found the following article online:

HOW TO TURN OFF THE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED
LIGHT IN YOUR TOYOTA:

If your Toyota needs an oil change, you may see the
maintenance required light come on. This can be
annoying, but is a good reminder that your oil needs to
be changed. However, the light does not automatically
reset after your oil is changed. If the person changing
your oil does not reset it, there is an easy way to turn
off the light yourself.

1. Put the key in the ignition and turn it up one notch.
The dashboard lights will come on.

2. Hold down your trip meter button next to the odometer.

3. When you are holding the trip meter button down, turn
your key to the next notch, so the dashboard lights will
be on but the car will not be started. Do not start the car.

4. Continue holding the trip meter button until the light turns
off. You have now re-set your Maintenance Required light.
While you are holding the button your odometer will stop
showing your accumulated miles and show a series of
dashes with one disappearing after the other until they are
all gone and then your odometer reading will reappear.

5. The maintenance light will go off.

All of that was done with that wonderful little trip meter button. Jimmm

I think of it as having an assistant or co-pilot. I'm still the boss, but
it keeps me from calling my car "dumb." Simple things like cruise control
and anti-skid, and even vvt - i (variable valve timing with intelligence)
are very useful, but they all can be over-ridden by the driver who is
ultimately in control. The way people like to talk on cell phones while they
are driving nowadays, some need to have cars where the computer is in
COMPLETE CONTROL. Jimmm

only way you can change vvti behavior is to cut wires.

i do agree tho, the age of the automatics is coming. and i don't mean automatic gearbox, either. (for those who have never read isaac asimov or other old sci-fi, an 'automatic' is a robotically controlled car - you get in, tell it where to go, and it drives for you. you can go to sleep if you want. an electronic chauffer, if you will.)

just tried it in the solara, it was at 6. I'm going to try it in a 98 sienna this afternoon. I did notice however while i was driving it the DRL are dimmer then regular headlights. Maybe this 1-20 is a dimmer for the drl?
