Sorry guys I originally posted this in the wrong (Gen 2) Section.

I have a 99 SLE SC'd. My AC light turns on (does not blink), and it does not sound like my compressor is turning on. I recently installed my SC, and the belt still feels tight. My compressor pulley is definitely spinning, but there is no cold air or sound coming from it. Never recharged the refrigerant, so its possible that might be the issue. I dont want to recharge it yet until I due my due diligence in finding the real issue.

Does the compressor stay OFF when there is low/no refrigerant?

Where should I start to find where the problem lies?

My compressor pulley is definitely spinning, but there is no cold air or sound coming from it.

I'm roasting in this So. Cali (IE) heat!!!

There is a pressure switch and if the refrigerant is low it will not cycle the compressor to prevent damage.

You can buy a guage that attaches to the low side A/C fitting and see if the refrigerant is low.

Ok Cali, the compressor is located directly under your alternator and you can see the pulley turn when your comp. clutch engages. Start there, see if our compressor clutch is kicking in when your AC is turned on. If your car has no refrigerant the compressor will cycle constantly when your AC is turned on. Otherwise you have some other problem. If it doesn't cycle at all then you either have a dead circuit (check fuses and plugs) or a failing clutch (not enough friction material to turn the pulley).
Or something else may be wrong. (?)
Hope that answers your questions.
\
CORRECTION, if the refrigerant level is low the clutch stays engaged. If there is no refrigerant the low pressure switch will disengage the clutch.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

AC was working fine before and after the install. It has been about 3 weeks post SC install, and all of a sudden it crapped out.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I have the solution.

who installed the SC ?

did they bend the a/c lines a little to compensate for the SC plate?

I got my AC fixed!

It turns out that my SC rubbed against my a/c line, and eventually caused a hole where my refrigerant leaked out. Beware to anyone who installs their own SC!!! My rear engine mount are also all effed up which added to the clearance issue.

Thanks to GregTRD for his help with the diagnosis and repair. Greg really knows his sh!t! He'll be doing more work on my ride in the near future...fo sho!

same problem

Postby PeteGLH » Tue Aug 25, 2009 1:19 pm

I'm having the same problem...

I flick the A/C switch on, the compressor does not engage. I routed 12V directly to the compressor and it works fine.

From what I hear, I could just be low on refrigerant which would cause the compressor to not come on at all?? I find that kind of unlikely?

werd. this is an old problem. i actually had to replace that thick metal piping since there was a bored hole in it!

upon replacement, I bent the line slightly to allow clearance of the SC's pulley...good job finding out the problem
