Idling speed

Postby Jakecallun20 » Mon Jun 29, 2009 11:22 am

When I bought my V6 Gen 1, it had 130k on it, and it was idling at about 16-1800 rpms in drive fully warmed up! Now it idles at 725 rpms constantly and no bouncing of the needle. All it took was.....Spark plug change, plug wires, fuel filter, LUCAS oil brand fuel system cleaner, removed and cleaned out the throttle body and part of the intake plenum, cleaned maf sensor and a new TRD reusable air filter. That solved it. Maybe all your car needs is a good tune up.

mine is really messed up. When i stop it will idle high about 900 and slowly work its way down and shake a little, but never dies

toytim wrote:We have the same problem, when the engine warms up and are sitting at a light in drive the engine idles down and the whole car shakes a bit. It actually stalled at the light a couple times. I cleaned the intake, put new plugs/wires and filter too. I reset the ECU a couple times since but no change. I'm thinking a sensor. Any help would be great, Tim

its just weird that when i cleaned the throttlebody the first time, it fixed the problem, but the next day, when i decided to do a more thourogh cleaning, it went back to the same problem. I was looking on some sites and someone said that I could take it to Toyota and they just plug something up the the car (I have no idea what it's called) and they can reset the idling speed from that machine. I don't know. I might need new plugs, I'll check them out.

lol you guys got me thinking now... mine starts up (from cold start) and idles in drive/park @ around 1400 rpm... but after about a mile of driving, it drops down to around 5-600 rpm park/drive idle. reading about this, i've learned that this is normal. On cold start, it revs higher @ idle to warm the engine temp to operating temp... which takes about a mile of driving, then the idle drops to 600ish which is normal.

I started my car today after not driving it for a week and it idled at 1400RPM in Park, after I put it in drive it dropped to 900RPM eventually it went down to 600-700RPM. So that is normal? I have SLE V6. I didn't notice the high idle until today.

why dont you try cleaning you iac (idle air control valve)? that can cause erratic idle

for toyota's im sorry no, you can not plug into and adjust idle speed. they are all set to around 700-800 once total warm. the only adjustment for idle on the throttle body itself is a small allen headed screw. but it does have the toyota yellow mark, you know the (dont screw with mark). worst comes to worst your iac is sticking. or even your throttle body is no good or you havea vacum leak. of course this only works for the non fly by wire throttle body's. which there is no adjustment at all
