Fog lights stopped working!

Fog lights stopped working!

Postby mazen222 » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:20 pm

I'm driving normally, then i hear a litle "tick" next to fog lights switch. The same tick i hear when i turn my fog lights on/off.... after that tick, my fogs turned off and wont come back on. :(

I dont think its the bulbs, since they both shut down at the same time... is it a fuse or something? how can i check? im noob at this.

oh, i have HID fogs and headlights too. Headlights still function properly.

in case this might help, i had litle accident a while ago and some water sometimes accumulates in my passanger side fog light... the right side had stopped working for like a 1 week, but then everything was normal. this was ~1 month ago.

Thanks for any help!! if its a fuse issue, where is it?

sounds like a short check the fuse box behind the change holder cup on the left of the dash blow the dimmer switch if im not mistaken it is a 15amp fuse if you replace it and it blows again then your gonna have to go over the wiring that powers your ballasts

That "tick" that you hear is the relay for your fogs. The same tick that you hear when you turn your fogs on/off you heard at that time? If so you might need a new relay. I would take it out and check it with a battery charger and see if it still ticks, if not, you need a new one.

Well, in short, a relay opens and closes depending upon another electrical current that flows to it. So, for instance, it keeps your fogs from staying on when you turn your car off. When the relay gets the signal that you have turned your car off (the ON switch on your ignition losses power) it releases a small pin inside that disconnects the fogs power source. I installed a relay on my blinking LED alarm light that I put in. I connected one end to the battery, and the other to my ACC switch on my ignition. So when the relay gets the signal it flips the switch and turns off the light when the car is on. Sorry of that was confusing, that's the best I can do on the explaining part lol. But in my opinion that is what it is. They can go bad and it is not uncommon.

Here is a diagram. When the "coil" gets power it attracts the pin to the other end thus supplying power to whatever it is connected to.

Does your foglight switch still feel the same when you move it between on/off?

If theres still a definite "click", then my guess is you blew a fuse, and the sound you heard was the relay turning off. Check all your fuses, and report back. Pull ALL the fuses and take a look...not just the ones related to "fog lamps"

you have a short it may be one of your ballasts or the connecting wires i doubt that it is any of the stock wiring imo you need to go over all the after market wiring did you install them your self ? it could possably be that moisture has gotten into the ballast or the plugs somewhere

looks like you know your stuff man...

i did all the wiring myself. Since i hit a mountain of snow, there is some water accumulation in the passenger side fog light and it had stopped working for 1 weeks after the hit (it worked after that), so i suspected the problem is comming from there.

i took out my headlight to check the wiring and when i tried to unplug the wire the goes into the ballast, water started to spill from the wire onto the redish plug below it... the wire was filled with water. Thats the stock wire that the oem bulb used to be connect to drectly.

heres some pics i took with the phone

i followed that wire to see where water can come from, but i didnt see anywhere... that wires is strapped to the LH corner light wire and then they are both wrapped by a thicker harness...

I'm going to go buy some more fuses and try again... it was raining pretty hard last week and i was driving on the highway

what now?

im glad i could help i think if you mount your ballast with the wires facing sideways it will prevent the water from pooling in the plug hope all goes well
