How do I know if I have ABS Brakes?

How do I know if I have ABS Brakes?

Postby PlayaDelReyDave » Thu Jun 04, 2009 11:43 pm

I know this might sound silly, but I can't figure it out. I can't remember if this car has 'em. I looked in the owners manual and it describes ABS, but that could just be a standard mention in the manual. How do I figure that out? Thanks.

Take your car in a parking lot, accelerate to 30mph. Slam the brakes as hard as you can. If they lock up, you don;t have ABS.

This way works best, just look for the module under the hood. It's usually right after the firewall, maybe on the driver's side. It's basically just a box with a few hard lines coming out of it.

well, the camry may not, since it's been around for a while.
but the solara which was made in 1999+, i figure would all come with abs.

I don't have ABS. Kind of surprised me when I first got the car but it wasn't something I wasn't used to.

When I had a 2001 Solara 4banger (bought it new) it didn't come with ABS, it was still an option back then, I think they came standard only with the SLE V6's.

Jetbtkng has the simplest answer. All ABS equipped cars MUST have an ABS warning light and it MUST light on test everytime you start up the car. If the ABS warning doesn't temporarily light up at each start then you don't have ABS. Or you can tailgate your nearest tourist in a rental car.
