Poor man supercharger

Poor man supercharger

Postby ridetopless83 » Tue May 12, 2009 2:10 pm

I just had the most brillante idea. Instead of buying an expensive supercarger, I am going to get an extra battery and an electric leafblower. Mount the leaf blower up to my intake running aff the spare battery and there is the poor man supercharger. Depending on the model of leaf blower I am guessing an increase of 100hp ( those leaf blowers can blow at 150 mph losts of boost). If any one wants to try please show me the pics, I can not even afford the leaf blower, yet.

Actually, there's nothing wrong with the idea.
Which specific blower to use? I have no idea what the delivery rate of a leaf blower is (CFM vs. pressure), but there's something that will work, a blower isn't magic.
Whether you extra battery weight, and the complexity of dual batteries (you need an isolator so that the alternator doesn't melt trying to charge the 2nd battery when the blower is on) make it more trouble than it's worth is another matter.
How to make the ECM "see" positive pressure (blower into the TB)? I have no idea if it can be tricked.
TB ahead of the blower? Possible.
The "electric superchargers" (actually boat bilge ventilator fans) sold everywhere don't work because they're way, way too small, and if they were big enough the alternator drain would be huge.
Use relays, very thick wires, fuses or circuit breakers everywhere.

Not a practical project due to all the R&D, space and weight problems, blah - but it could be done.
If you need bigger, there are squirrel cage blowers made in 12 volt for truck heaters etc. that already have good shape4 (turbo-oid), ducts built in, flanges to mount etc. but they're pretty big.
You might find a better one in 115 volt, and either use a transformer or swap the motor out.

hilarious.

so you're saying, let the leaf blower blow directly into your air intake? the idea makes sense. I don't know about an increase of 100 hp though.

just an estimate

Postby ridetopless83 » Tue May 12, 2009 4:36 pm

The 100 hp Gain is just an estimate based on nothing. 150mph winds from the leaf blower I am not sure what PSI the blower could sustain but if the gaasket did not will not blow this is the future. Plus crafstman has a lifetime warranty!

P.S. I want to hear idead about a leaf blower exahuast. If the leaf blower is blowing the exahaust put even more vacum boost?
