If that is the case and you actually want to keep the car make sure they take a look at the spec. on the valve clearances. They usually don't need to be adjusted, but since the top of the engine is off anyways...

This is also a good chance to learn about motors by getting to take one apart, since you have another car you drive mostly. Unless you're not comfortable doing that kind of work, which is understandable.

I'd be willing to take the engine apart if I weren't so afraid of putting it in upside down and making the problem worse lol. I'm considering my options:
1) Sell the car, minus the $1,000 it would cost to fix...Probably get around $3,000 if i'm lucky
2) Get a friend to help fix the car with me (one that's mechanically adept)
3) PAY the mechanic :o

decisions, decisions....

I'm leaning more towards #2, anybody know where I can get parts
and who's in the SF Bay Area that wants to lend a fellow SGer a hand? 8)

I can help you if you're willing to drive to Salinas on the weekend. If your pump is leaking, I would suggest a new timing belt, plugs, wires (depends if they're still good), thermostat, radiator hoses, and Toyota coolant also. There's a lot of stuff you can do if you're digging that deep into the engine.

thanks for the offer, but when I started researching into this and asking around I started having second thoughts. I was told if I was to do this on my own, the car would essentially become a project car cuz of how long the work would take. I may just have to spend the $$$, fix the car, and hope someone buys it at/around KBB.

The part I'm dreading is the sales process, the time it takes, and having to let go of my baby

I can kiss my tax return goodbye too

It has never spent more than a few days anywhere before being sacrificed.
