fj's are awesome to drive, a ton of aftermarket and off road upgrade potential. but from my experience you will not get better than 17 mpg avg. in town and highway. the 4.0 is a torque monster, but likes the fuel.
99 DWP SEV6 5spd 6.5psi+Meth, Tein+Tokico, EricSol+Brembos+EBC, OBX Headers+OBX 3" Exhaust, Supra MAF & 330cc, Spec 2+, Fidanza, TRD lip kit, Injen+Ext, Optima Red, Infinity 60.5+693.7i, 2 Kappa Perfect 12 VQ's+iPod+JVC DVD...etc

Getting an SUV isn't an upgrade as far as I'm concerned. If you are getting sick of your car and you have some money, my suggestion is always to buy yourself something for your car, new wheels for instance. Or get that dent fixed. Repaint the front bumper or have the seats reupholstered. If you do stuff like that, it will feel like a new car. Lots of times people fix up their cars before selling them and during the process think, man this looks good.

I say, don't wait until you sell it. Spending $2,000 on new rims and tires will save you 5 years of car payments every month, at the end of which, you will be in the same boat.

Unless of course, you just hate the thing.

My $0.02

Good luck.
