ENGINE SWAP

ENGINE SWAP

Postby njzghetofabolous » Fri Aug 29, 2003 10:46 am

hey guys, im new to this forum. I have a 99 solara SE. Its an automatic 4 banger. I was doing some research into doing an engine swap from my 4 cylinder to the 2001 6 cylinder. I wanted to know what parts i can use from my 4 cylinder and what parts i would need to purchase to make the 6 cylinder fit. Any helpful feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm no expert, but the prevailing consensus is that it is much more practical to buy a 6 cyl car to start with rather than trying to convert a 4 cylinder. There are a lot of differences besides the engine, such as transmission, computer, brakes, wheels, suspension, etc.

well, i dont think i would need to change the wheels, brakes, or suspension...cuz all those are already aftermarket. And i dont have money to buy a new car because i already started working on this solara. + I like the fact that not many people modify this car in my area. So this car is a keeper.

Well, if you are bound and determined to do it, then find a donor car and compare the parts. That is always the easiest and most practical way.

im only willing to do the swap for the v6 so i have the option of getting the TRD supercharger. Unless someone can fill me in on some info for a turbo on my 4banger, then i wouldn;'t have to go throught the hassle.

There actual is a turbo kit for the 99-01 4 banger.

http://www.rippmods.com/products/produc ... =Toyota+I4

Yea... they didn't list the engine code, but it's for the 5S-FE 2.2 L Inline 4

A V6 swap is VERY impractical because it'd cost less to sell yours and just buy a V6 Solara.

You'd need the engine, the transmission, the ECU, the new mounts, you'd have to tear out everything under the hood and re-arrange it using the V6 parts (they used differently shaped things so the engine fits. If you look under the hood, your engine has tons of room left over while the V6 is pretty damn cramped). I'm sure there are a few other things you'd need, but I don't remember... If you're going to swap engines, you may as well swap to the new V6 (3MZ-FE) in the new Solara since it's the same as the old... just slightly larger. It uses the same mounts as the 1MZ and the Supercharger (I spoke to a Toyota Parts guy at the dealer) should be here within a year.
1GR-FE ftw!

:iamwithstupid: <--- Wish we had this smilie! (HINT to mods...cus i don't want to go and find it and host it..blah blah).

Anyhow, the 5s turbo has been around for a while -

It would cost you more to swap out the engine than for you to take a loss on your 4 banger and buy a v6...the money could be well spent on other goodies! (if your wanting to swap things around..and are itching to spend...then i'd much rather put a 3s motor)

Also: use the search button, i'm sure we've advised against this earlier as well...

i'm on that bandwagon as well.
as long as you're trading in the i4 and getting a V6, do yourself another favor and get a manual trans.

thanks alot for your response guys.. It really helped alot. I was thinking of getting a brand new replacement engine for my 1999 solara...I have the i4 and since im nearing 300,000 miles, i wanted to know if i purchased a new i4 engine from Toyota, would there be any complications installing it?

Another question.
---> xravexboix <----
the turbo kit you referred me too, would you consider it a reliabe turbo or will i end up with a lousy product that will blow my engine?

Thanks

To swap you will need a 1MZFE motor with header and y pipe, transmission, v6 motor mounts, new radiator pipes, new radiator, rear disc brake assembly, drive shaft, v6 ECU, v6 harness (completely) and there might be more stuffs. at camryclub.org there is a guy complete a swap into a 92 celica.

but in my opinion its not worth the headache, just trade it in for a v6 or force induction it
