I have decided to start changing my own oil I need to know what would be the best oil and filter for the job my engine is a 1mzfe with 113000 miles on it any ideas

I have 116,000 so Im in the same boat as you when it comes to mileage. I find it is best if you want your engine to last longer to go with Castrol Edge full synthetic 10w30 and a K&n HP filter. this will cost anywhere between 30 to 50 dollars total (oil plus filter)depending on where you go, I buy from amazon.com, its usually alot cheaper than autozone ( i hate btw) and the shipping is usually free :)

why do you use the 10 /30 as opposed to the 5/30

Mine started to consume a little bit of oil when it was cold... thicker oil has less of a chance of seeping through seals

3-5k miles is about average recomended

Same here, Mobil 1 syn 5w30. These days Toyota recommends 5w20 for better gas mileage on their cars.
