Rear brakes question

Rear brakes question

Postby aznsensation » Tue Mar 10, 2009 6:52 pm

Hello all. I was wondering if someone could answer a question about my 2003 toyota solara. I've changed the front brake pads and rotors before. To depress the brake caliper piston, I used a c-clamp and it was relatively straight forward. When I helped my brother replace his rear brakes on his honda accord, I had to use a special tool that I had to turn like a screwdriver to depress his caliper piston. Well I have to replace the rear brake pads soon and was wondering if anyone knew if i could use a C-clamp or if I had to use a special tool as well. If I did need the special tool, can anyone tell me where I can get it? Thanks and I really appreciate the help.

the specialised tool does make it easier but it can be done with a c clamp

Yeah the Honda's do need that tool.
The Toyota's don't need that special tool to depress the piston.
The C-clamp will work.

@ D-money - Yeah the tool makes it a hell of a lot easier. But it was kinda tough using a cclamp while using a huge screwdriver to turn while the caliper was still connected to the brake line.

@ SleeperSolara - Are you sure the rear calipers don't need the special tool? If so that's awesome and that makes the job a lot easier. Thanks for the info.

i used to use a pair of channel lock pliers to depress the piston in.

sandwhiched by 2 of the old brake pads so it wont scratch the surface of the caliper.
