NEED HELP: Transmission Swapping

Postby SpeedySolara » Sat Dec 27, 2008 10:18 am

Oh man, I have a lot of work ahead of me. Truly I could care less for cruise control. Living in NYC you cant even use it for more than 5 minutes anyway. By any chance will swapping the clusters, ECU's, and transmissions change the miles that are appear on the cars?

I believe that the odometer reading is saved in the cluster....but I may be wrong. but if you swap the cluster and the ecu, etc, then that should do the trick

Anybody know where the odometer reading is saved? I dont want any odometer discrepancies when selling the car(s).

The reading is saved in the cluster. I am 100% sure.

.
The mileage is saved on your cluster, you can swap it out it'll work fine, I'm running my auto cluster on my 5speed just to be different. On the cluster the "R" will light up when you shift to reverse and release the clutch pedal, the "D" will also do the same.

I actually like that more :D. Did you have to do any special wiring to get that or was it plug and play? Screw changing the clusters than, I want to be like you LOL.

The traction control computer is connected directly to the ABS actuator in the engine compartment. If both cars have traction control, then you should be fine, but if one has it and the other doesn't, then you would have to move the ABS actuator from one to the other with all the other stuff. You may be able to just remove the computer and put it on the other actuator, but I doubt that. Also, you should check the rest of the system in case you need a traction control relay or something. I discovered this by looking into the ABS. I wasn't interested in Traction control.

Also, I read somewhere that the ECU for the manual and the automatic 1mzfe were identical. The source was quoted as being on the MR2 forums. Those guys have been swapping the 1mzfe into their MR2's for a while now. I have not verified that tidbit of information though.

Good luck. Seems like a lot of work for a little gain. Personally, I'd put 5 speeds in both of them.

What exactly constitutes "all the other stuff" and would it be hard to do this? If you know anything else about this topic, please give me some more insight. I would really like both cars to be COMPLETELY functional. In short, the only thing I'm not changing is the mileage cluster but everything else will be swapped. I just need some confirming about the cruise control and the traction control once they're swapped. Thank you all for all the help.

By "all the other stuff" I only meant the other stuff you are choosing to swap.

The ABS signals from the wheels go to a computer that is attached directly to the actuator, which is the cube shaped object under the hood with all of the brake lines running to it. If you have ABS only, then it looks like this:

If you have ABS and Traction Control then it looks like this:

I can't tell from these photos if the computer is swappable between the actuators, but it looks like they are not from the hole locations on the top.

Either way the electrical connections are different since they perform two different functions.

Hope this helps.

I'm going to take a look under the hood and try to figure this out. Besides the wire harnesses, does anyone know if the tubes are the same? There are 4 on top on both so maybe I just need to yank all the wires out of the engine bay and I should be alright. Any ideas?

OK so here are the actual pictures which coincide with the pictures above. If I switch out the units and the wiring harnesses, do I also need to switch the 6 cables that are screwed onto the units? It seems as though they're all the same and it'll save me some extra work if I don't need to switch them.

I'll try to take as many pictures as possible to have a good write up but I cant spend the whole day snapping shots or else the swap will never be done lol. Does anyone know about those cables going into the ABS Actuators?

I would presume that the lines are run the same. don't forget to check to see if the brake booster and brake master cylinder is the same as well.
