Looking to replace clutch, a couple of questions

Looking to replace clutch, a couple of questions

Postby mazen222 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:15 am

I need to buy a new clutch. My car is stock 5 speed 1999 v6 SE, so i dont think i need more than the OEM. (although i like to race)

Did any of you buy this online? Where should I buy it from? Toyota, ebay, other online websites?

Also, how much should I expect to pay for the parts?

and how many hours does it take to change it?

Should i do it at toyota or a regular mechanic?

What are the other components that need to be changed while the mechanic is down there?

Many thanks!

I recently had my clutch replaced about 2 months ago. I bought new, the pilot bearing and flywheel from the Dealer - discounted. Btw, no need for a release bearing/throwout bearing. The work was done by a Toyota Master Tech, which I paid $300 for labor. GL bro.

actually, to counter what ^ he just said, you don't need a pilot bearing for our fwd cars, but you DO need a throwout bearing though

I've now done a 5-speed swap, pulled my motor/tranny to get my tranny resealed, and now also replaced my motor.

when I got my tranny resealed, I though I could go cheap on the throwout bearing so I didn't replace it...bad idea. It made whining noises until I recently replaced it when I replaced my motor. When I tried to spin the old one, it made clicking noises all the way around....I would hate to think what would have happened if it seized while in use and exploded inside the bellhousing.

Also, have your mechanic check the rear main seal on your motor. If there's any sign of leaking or oil residue, have him replace that too

i paid about 235 for a new clutch from toyota and all plates and other parts (sorry don't know the details). 27 for a new rear main seal. 400 for labor, and 50 to resurface the flywheel. drives great now, pedal is a lot softer and the squeaking i was getting in humid weather while depressing the clutch is gone.

The squeak noise comes from lack of lubrication in the transmission end of the shifter assembly. If you get the squeak again, you can lube it yourself and not have to wait for the next clutch change.

I already have that squeaking sound when i depress my clutch. I thought it was coming from the release baring... where is it exactly that i should lub for it to go away?

yup, that's usually coming from the release bearing if it's coming from the engine bay side

excellent advice. i'd ask the mechanic how much extra it is to replace the rear main seal (even if it's still in good shape) - if it sounds pretty reasonable to you, do it. the cars 10 years old - you have to start thinking about rubber integrity. the clutch will probably last you another 10 years, but if you have to replace that seal in between, you're going to pay 7 hours labor time to replace a $20 part.

i paid close to $1000 for OEM clutch replacement here in CT - don't know what prices are like around you, but it's mostly labor cost (7 book hours @ $90/hr). clutch, flywheel, etc. were all <$300.

Ahh... Thanks for the correction bro. The other car is a RWD Turbo, which I am used to working with. Thanks again.

Anything else I should change at the same time as the clutch other than the rear main seal?

buy an exedy. you can usually find them cheap on ebay. they say its an oem replacement but it was a lot better than my stock clutch. but maybe thats just because it was new. ive gone over 75k on my exedy so far.

i would recommended check and replace cv axle seal as well, where it is only $7 part each, and also good time to drain and refill fresh gear oil.
