Solara vrs. Camry

Solara vrs. Camry

Postby vice » Fri Jan 16, 2009 10:04 am

My 2007 convert. is in the shop for a day, so they gave me a 2009 Camry to drive with only 1400 miles on it. Most people think a Solara is just a Camry with differant sheet metal. Other than a bit more power for the Camry the Solara has it all over the Camry. Better seats, better ride, better looks and a nicer interior make the Solara the winner.
I was thinking maybe I would go to one when it is time for a replacement, but it is boring as heck.

I can't say for certain on a lot of things but for sure on looks that is purely subjective. Without a kit spoiler wheels and tiny the gen 2 and 2.5 are on par with a aztek in my book

hAHAHAHa colddddd. the only thing I don't like about the stock solara is that it sits too high. Camry has potential but you're right... quite a boring car.

I drove a latestGen Camry when my car was at the dealer a few years ago. There were things I like about the Camry, but overall...I'd stick with my Solara. I bet the Camry is more refined than the Solara at this point (mine is a 2005), but overall, I'm very happy with my ride (stock). The only thing I wish was for more power (2.5L and 6-speed coming soon jeje)

^ a fair one.. we all have opinions and i believe if they actually took time to make a clean design for the gen2 there would have been a gen 3 and so on..

i think the gen 2 stock non se without the kit looks horrible.. i mean my god the lines are everywhere and the headlights are ungodly out of place on that front end dont make me get started on the gen2 tails you desperately need the 2.5 ones!!!!.. and the stock wheels are hideous.. its only when you put a kit, lower, wheels and modify it that it starts to look good.. the gen 1 looked way better out the box... heck the stock 17s make a difference on the car but it needs to be modded to be appreciated... like the gen 4 econobox i drive.. it needs something to look better..

remember cutting edge design (think aztek) is only good if the general public accepts it.. and lol that isint the case for the gen 2

ok im done ranting...

btw if u mod the gen 2 its purddy.. look @ poshpeppers and u see what u can do with a car..

Well, I want to mod my plain flavored stock 16-inch, no kit, no spoiler Gen2...but no $$$.

I've always loved the way the 1-1.5 Solara looked...still remember the Toyota ad where its doing a 180° at the end! I still like it even after purchasing my Gen2 (would consider purchasing one for modding in the future). I don't know what Toyota was thinking when they modeled the Gen2, but still, the Gen2 is a sweet looking ride; I get props on it all the time, and its not only the girls talking...you just have to look past mod vision. Oh, and there aren't many cars like this one (and by that I don't mean Aztec like).

Once I get the dough, I will drop it with TRD and put the small rear spoiler, with wheel upgrade following. However, I don't miss the fact that it doesn't have the body kit.

As for the Camry conversation, you might want to check out the 2010 Camry thread started a while ago. I think its getting better all the time:

It's hard for me to be impartial about the looks of my own car, but I don't think the gen1 /1.5 looks ANY better. I've wanted a solara since before they made the gen2-- waaay before. When it came time to buy, I wanted to buy the newest model I could afford. That way I would have more standard features and the most up to date suspension, safety, and engine management system available. The gen 2 is the clear winner in those categories, IMO, and if I do say so, the gen 1/1.5 is already beginning to look dated. As for which car has a more 'timeless' style, I think you could make a persuasive argument either way.
I really like the gen1/1.5 and always have but at this stage of my life, I want the most technology and comfort right out of the box. I bought a driver, not a custom, or a sports car. Been there, done that!

Btw: Aztec? Pah-leeeze! :D

I share your opinion with regards buying the Solara because it was the newer alternative. Also remember disliking when they introduced the Gen2, partially because I like square cars (jeje) and one of the pros of purchasing the Solara, other than it was the best dealer offering at the time, was that it was a 5-speed manual.

I wonder how a Gen3 would look like? I've always liked the Gen1-1.5 because it spawns from what I believe is one of the best looking Camry models around. The Gen2 is also a bit chubbier and heavier than the first gen, but it seems to be a trend with all automakers...just make them bigger. That said, a Gen3 Solara might have a 2.5L Dual VVTi with 6-speed manual for starters, and who knows maybe the 3.5L V6 will be offered with the option of a manual transmission once again.

In the end, only good things to come from Toyota (although they could get a bit better). Anybody with free time and Photoshop care to hit us with some art?

What they need to do is for Toyota to bring back the VVTL-i engine w/ the Yamaha block back. The engine that was in the 7th gen Celica GTS's. Those were some really tough engines that can take a beating and were very reliable.
