NEED HELP: Transmission Swapping

NEED HELP: Transmission Swapping

Postby SpeedySolara » Tue Dec 23, 2008 11:44 am

I'm planning on swapping a 5 speed into my automatic and vice versa. I've done ample research and its definitely doable. On the other hand, I have a few concerns about whats going to happen when I swap my automatic ECU into the 5 speed wiring. Essentially I'm trying to make my 5 speed to an automatic. Anyway, those concerns are:

1. Can someone confirm if the auto & manual ECU's are plug and play.
2. Will there be any CEL (Check engine lights)?
3. Will the car turn on using an automatic ECU with a 5 speed wiring?
4. If the car does turn on, will it be able to shift gears fine?

NOTE: To clear things up...2 Solara's, ones automatic and the other is stick. I want to swap the transmissions into each other. I know a lot of you will say its dumb but than again you cant get the options of an SLE in an SE. So if this swap turns out successful then I'll have a unique 5 speed SLE, like some others on this forum.

Well I already have access to an automatic and manual solara. What I'm basically doing is swap their transmissions. At this point, I know what to do for the 5 speed transmission to work in the SLE but I'm concerned whether the automatic transmission will work once its on the SE (which is currently 5 speed).

Im asuming both are v6, the only thing that you would have to check is to see if the bracket for the clutch pedal is there, the pedal has a bolt that goes at the very top, when I did my swap on my camry, the bracket was not there, so I had to take it off the donor camry, with out that bracket the pedal will be wiggly. Do it right the first time swap out the wire harness. Are both cars fed spec or cali spec. Hope there both the same, makes it easier to swap.its doable if you swap all the need it parts.

Both are V6 1MZ's & fed specs. How hard is it to switch the wire harnesses? I probably have to rip off the rugs, right?

Not necessarily true. I have every SLE option in my 5-speed aside from homelink and the badges. Everything is an add-on with Toyota.

Are you sure? I think only some options were add-ons like leather seats but some aren't such as auto climate control, homelink, and side airbags. Speaking of that, do you have the auto climate control with your 5 speed transmission?

if you've got both cars in your possession, then there's really nothing to ask...you have EVERYTHING that you'll need to do the swap, and nothing can really go wrong since you have ALL the parts that you'll need

I'm with greg on this one though, in that you should swap the engine harness as well while you do it. even among the years there have been slight differences in wiring harnesses, and you'll save time by just swapping them onto each each.

also, from what I've gathered, the ecu/harnesses are usually swappable- as in that the plugs fit each ecu just fine. Not sure how that works with the clutch safety switch though, but it's probably the same wire as the neutral/park switch in the auto

^^You're right but I was asking so that if the wiring itself doesn't make a difference then I'll leave it right where it is and not go through the extra work.

wiring does for sure now that I think about it.

you can use the auto wiring harness for the 5speed since you can trick the ecu into thinking that auto tranny is still there, but I don't think that the 5-speed harness will even have the plug/wires for the auto tranny/solenoids, etc

That's exactly what I was thinking, so I guess the other way around it wont work. I suppose I have no other choice but to swap the wiring and ECU's as well if I want both cars to be driveable. Is traction control and cruise control work integrated into the ECU? If not, will the swap affect either car?

yes, there should be a separate cruise control ecu, and the traction control is in the motor/tranny ecu (I think they're the same?)

Eye8Pussies: Thank you for all the help and replies to my thread. I'm glad traction control is not an issue since its part of the ECU and will be swapped with the auto tranny (please correct me if I misunderstood). But would I have to swap the cruise control ECU or would it be the same in both the auto and 5 speed?

the cruise control will be very different as well I would presume. lol...so...yeah....you may as well just swap everything and keep it simple.
