Getting clutch replaced, does this sound right?

Getting clutch replaced, does this sound right?

Postby hari-bhari » Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:34 pm

I just talked to my mechanic who was a former Toyota tech and this is what I was quoted.

OEM Clutch and all Parts - $229.30
Rear Main Seal - $27 (He said that since the tranny would be out, it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace this, does that sound right?)
Labor - $450

Total: $733.38

Does this sound about right for parts and labor? Is there another brand I could go with for less price and equal reliability, or equal price and greater performance? My engine is basically stock so I don't need the extra grip. Also is the rear seal something that people do get replaced at the same time?

I was thinking of getting my alternator upgraded at the same time and he asked for $60 in labor, does that sound good?

Thanks

I am about to replace my clutch as well...

OEM Clutch and all Parts - $229.30
ya, that seems fair... you can also get more expensive ones from ebay if you are looking for performance

Rear Main Seal - $27 (He said that since the tranny would be out, it would be a good idea to go ahead and replace this, does that sound right?)
i have no idea, but good to know, its only 27$ so why not

Labor - $450
Sounds too expensive... my mechanic asked for 300 canadian for labor.

keep us posted

when you think about it, how much do they charge for labor. if they say they charge $60 a hour, and it takes 8 hours to do it well thats $480.

I needed a freeze plug replaced on my old ranger that was being the tranny and they wanted to charge me over $1100 to do it i said screw that and i did it myself for about $12.00 in parts

for anything to do with auto repair its best to know how to do it yourself or know someone who will get you a really good deal, thats why im going to college for this next year there is always going to be cars that needed to be fixed and is always going to be lacking good honest repairmen.

Those prices are on par for what I've paid in the past.

parts normally includes clutch disc, clutch pressure plate, release/throw out bearing, sound about right.

also ask ur mechanic about the cv axle seals as well, $10 ro $15 parts, since both axle will be out of tranny.

if rear main seal wasn't change lately, highly recommend change it,
resurace flywheel if you are going to re-use it.

Sounds about right, I recently had mine replaced for ~$800 give or take.

My other shop wanted $350 for labor so I could have saved more money going there. But since I didn't pay for it I didn't have much say in where it was getting fixed...

Replace that $27 dollar plug. Oil leaks will from there, so change it now while at it...always done it with my household cars.

BTW, do they have to drop chassis x-member to access transmission? My old Taurus needed that done in order to just inspect transmission; thus $200 CHEAP to look at transmission in ANY shop.

What mileage does your car have?
