225/45/18 spacer question

Postby gnaw_divad » Thu Oct 23, 2008 7:47 pm

Just changed my tires today at AMERICAN TIRE COMPANY.

I've always had 225/40/18's and they've cleared perfectly. Slight rubbing in the rear when going over bumps on the strut but never anything serious.

Wanted a slightly smoother ride so I changed to 225/45/18's today, which should fit but they rub on the back strut. I have the C5000 RH Rims - I believe are 18x7.5 +42. Looks like they barely rub.

I've been advised to get a set of H&R Hubcentric Spacers from Tire Rack by the shop but he didn't know what size. He did mention that those were the only spacers he'd recommend.

Anyone with a similar set-up that can advise on a spacer size and company?

Thanks

I'd say a 5mm spacer is plenty.

You could go H&R or Ichiba.

I'm in the market for some 5mms for the rear as well. I'm leaning more towards the Ichibas over the H&Rs, only because I like the idea of the extended thread lugs replacing the stock ones and the spacer sliding onto those, as opposed to the H&R setup, which just bolts onto the existing lugs and uses its own on the spacer to mount the wheel (which is easier overall, but seems like a safety compromise as well). Your choice though, just thought I'd throw my insight out there.

Awesome, cool to know. I will ask about both when I make the call tomorrow.

What kind of tire set up do you have? I was also wondering if you had any shops that you were planning on making the purchase from?

I'm running 225/40/18, & my Works are 18x8.0 with a +37 offset. If anything, I had more of a problem rubbing the rear fender than the strut w/my offset this low, but I'm looking to run the spacer to get the wheel to sit more flush with the fender, and give me that much more clearance from the rear struts. Now, to alleviate the front rubbing....(suggestions anyone? Milt?!?)

As far as shops, I'd really just look around for who's got the best price shipped out to you. Evasive Motorsports has a decent rep (sells Ichiba), and there's a set of 5mm Ichibas on eBay for 59 plus shipping right now, listed under Ichiba 5mm Scion xB 08+ (which is the same center bore/bolt pattern-wise as the Solara, 60.1 mm bore, 5x114.3 bolt pattern).

Wrong, the H&R's are the same way.....

http://www.hrsprings.com/products/trak/
H&R DRS Series spacers fit between the wheel and hub, and require exchanging the existing wheel studs for longer ones.

DRM Series spacers bolt to the hub with existing wheel studs and special nuts (included). Wheel is bolted to new DRM wheel studs.

Now Ichiba

Version II

I have used both from both before... and all is good in the hood...

^Thanks for the clarification/advice bro, I wasn't aware that H&R did both types as well.

And haha, yeah yeah, I meant low for a FWD Camry w/no fender/liner modifications, since I don't see anyone besides Richard go any lower than +40-42; you RWD, near negative offset guys don't count!

thanks for the info!

I was just checking both the websites and for H&R they say their spacers vary from 10-40mm and Ichiba for the Solara has the smallest spacer at 15mm... ?? Do they not make a 5mm spacer or does it just have to be custom ordered.

Icihiba makes 5mm, it's H&R that doesn't make one less than 10mm, at least from what I can see.

H&R and Ichiba both make 5mm spacers.

H&R does not make 10mm for some reason (for our applications).....

Hey, just called H&R directly. They said the only 5MM spacer they carry for the 2000 Toyota Solara is the DRF part #10656014. This is the set where you will have to have your studs pressed to get installed.

I got a quote for $58.95 plus $15.00 shipping for the pair from one of the dealers that was listed on their site. Foreign Auto Tech. Ordered and should receive in 2 - 3 days.

Hope these work out!
