Greddy Oil Catch Can...

Greddy Oil Catch Can...

Postby Mr_Chunkz » Sat Oct 18, 2008 12:44 pm

Question for those who have/have experience with the Greddy oil catch cans...

Image
I will be purchasing one of these catch cans soon, their "verison two" can ( as opposed to version one can that I think John - Sleepersolara - has ) and on their website it lists two sizes for both verison one and verison two, 9mm and 15mm.

Whats the difference? I thought at first it had something to do with size of the tank but both 9mm and 15mm of verison two "super light" hold 1000cc....

The bigger it is, the more it can flow. Some buy the smaller one because some cars have smaller fittings on the engine itself. They get lazy trying to find a hose to convert small to large so the small one they go. Large ones are always better.

Order a Greddy one from ebay or order an ebay brand one?

I dunno something about ebay brands and engine parts makes me really uneasy lol =P
Specially cause the only "ebay brand" part i ever bought for my car, just simple indiglo gauges, broke after only 6 months of use.

A car is like a balloon. Especially on modified cars the balloon wants to expand. The best way to keep it from expanding is vac it out through the valve. The problem with that is that the engine is not always spinning fast enough to push its own internal back pressure air out. A way to solve that is have a hose from the valve cover directly to the intake to help suck it out. The next problem is while its sucking, oil tends to want to follow. Oil all over your throttle body will hurt performance so a catch can is place between the valve cover port and the intake so that when the intake sucks that air out, the catch can helps retain those oil in there so that the oil will not make it to the intake.

Sorry if that confuse you. studying for a test while typing :)

basically you have a hose that leads to the intake to let the engine "breathe". The factory setup recirculates this air back into the intake tract. Most of the times, oil and other contaminants follows and soils your intake tract, throttle body and MAF. This will all cause problems over the long run with power and reliability from your engine suckin on that oil and crap infested air thats being put back into your motor for combustion.

This is especially detrimental if you have a heavy right foot.. as I do

The oil catch can sucks all the oil and contaminants out of the airstream and stores them in a can, then feeds that inlet on the intake clean air.

Oh and quite frankly, I think these oil catch cans look pretty damn nerdy, but if it means i wont burn oil and will keep my intake, maf, throttle body and SC unit cleaner, ill do it.

+edit check out the fact or fiction page on import tuner for oct 2008 ( has a supra on front cover )...
In an SR20DET baseline dyno pull shows avg 242.8WHP
With catch can installed 244.3 WHP

I know thats not a big deal but I think its kinda cool that it adds a bit of power. I, on the other hand, am simply using it to keep my intake, tb, sc and engine cleaner

By the way for you guys using breather filters especially read this article. Breather filters on that vent near the valve cover actually DECREASES power because

Even more detrimental is when those cute little breather filters are used instead, that neither vent excess blow-by pressure as much as a vacuum-driven alternative, nor stint the build up of contaminants in the cylinder head -- doubly robbing power

I was due for one on my s/c solara, there was oil after the throttle body on the s/c when I pulled it... for sure a good investment no doubt IMO.
