Rear Wheels

Rear Wheels

Postby SpeedySolara » Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:19 pm

My rear wheels make a humming sound while I drive. Do I need the hub and bearings or should I just buy the bearings alone?

Knowing new cars you can't just buy a bearing because it's probably sealed into the hub. If you can and you are sure it's the bearing, just do the bearing unless something else is broken on the hub. The parts store should be able to tell you. Or tomorrow at school I could check Alldata...

If it's humming it may be a tire sound, which could be attributed to uneven wear (need alignment), or they may simply be unbalanced...

What else is leading you to conclude that it's a bearing issue?

I doubt its the wheels/tires because I've used my TRD rims and my SLE rims and the noise is still there. Its gotten louder in the last few months and its really annoying me. The noise is coming from the rear wheels so I'm assuming/making a wise guess its the bearings. Truly I'm uncertain though, I'm far from being a mechanic.

Does it make that sound when you're accelerating or braking?

If it's a bearing it won't matter. Is it more of a humming or a grinding?

As I go faster the noise gets louder. As long as the car is rolling, it will make that sound, even if the car is turned off. I compare the sound to that of knobby off road tires although its not exactly like it.

Change out the wheel bearing I had the same problem and I just replaced it very easy to do yourself. This is what the part looks like Image

sounds like a wheel bearing, but I can't be definate without hearing myself. Jack up the rear end and try to wiggle the rear wheels in any and every direction. If they definately move, it's a pretty good chance it's the bearing. If you're not sure don't risk it.
