Hey guys i havent chimed in for a while, but i have been experiencing some problems with my 5-speed recently. For a couple months now i have experiencing a whining noise anytime the clutch is pushed in, and whines follow the rpms up and down while the clutch is pushed in also. another problem i had been experiencing is getting the car to start rolling in first has become very weird. Everytime i get the car to roll in first the car starts to shake violently as if something is slipping........but at the same time i have never felt that the clutch was slipping while im driving..

Anyways, i took the car to a local tranny shop and their specialist basically said i might need a new clutch and most def some tranny work.......i believe he said something along the lines of new bearings and synchro's. Price estimated around 3 grand. So i am def not dropping 3 grand into my car considering it is not even worth that much anymore. any suggestions....................

I have a 1mz w/ 5 spd transmission----- Injen with cae, throttlebody spacer, twm shortshifter and other little things. so as you can see i have nothing big like forced induction. I also must mention i am creeping up on 170,000 miles. HELP!!

buy another tranny. its cheaper than getting it rebuilt. Otherwise, sucks but just sell the car as is and buy another one. I've seen some 5sp's for sale around here from tiem to time. sucks to say but sometimes its cheaper to replace than to repair.

umm, 3g's is abit much...
I have a 5 speed and the clutch plate, release bearing, flywheel, and labor cost $747.60 and was done at 145,777miles.

The only thing I've replaced so far is the slave cltuch... They didn't touch that and the reason I replaced it was it was squeaking and popping when pressing/depressing the clutch.

I suggest doing a tranny flush first. Then go from there.

Dude I've not had to replace anything like that on mine but I have to say I think 3 G's is way high. IMP the shop is trying to rip you. Seems you could buy a new one for less than that or at the least a really good used one.

Someone let me know if I'm wrong, but if I was forced to throw 3 G's into a '2000 stock tranny I'd be parting the Lara out as much as I love it.

Yea, local.
Another thing you can do to find a good shop is take time to ask around with people who you know that baby their cars. Ask who they trust and then goto that shop with afew questions about your tranny.

You should be able to change the tranny fluid yourself if you can change your own oil. If your not up to it, Ask around like stated above and take it to that shop.

I am fairly comfortable with flushin my tranny...however, i am very nervous becuase of the high mileage. a flush can be just as bad as it can be good....correct me if im wrong please

Like Tom wrote, changing the trans fluid is always a good thing... never bad.

you can't flush a 5-speed tranny, just drain and refill

as for the 3K, for a rebuild, that doesn't sound too far off.

but you'd be better off just picking up a used tranny for 500bucks or so from a junkyard and then a shop can install it for 1K or less

I have some thing similar to you're problem but its only when the car is cold, when i take off from first some times the engine shutters a bite but i think its cause of the fact that I am not giving enough gas and too much clutch. But after the car warms up its fine I can let the rpm almost drop to 1 and let go of the clutch and it takes off smooth. All my other gears are good from what I can feel, it being my DD. I'm at 230,000km on my 99. I got the car second hand so I have no clue if the clutch and gears were serviced at the right times. I am assuming so cause my clutch it still kinda stiff and smooth so I think the previous own did the proper maintaince when it was due. I have thought about changing the clutch and compression plate to a stage 1 or some thing of the sort but I don't know if I want it rougher for my DD. Just my 2 cents. :D :D

my 4cyl 5 speed tranny also have the simmilar symptom as you described, and initially i thought it was the clutch, so i went to online dealer, bought the oem clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing, rear main seal, and axle seal, and flywheel from ebay, total about $250 in part, spent 20 hours changing the clutch myself, and the old clutch is indeed wearing out, flywheel surface not smooth, rear main seal leaking, after i installed all the new parts back, and to my disappointment, the same groaning/whining noise still there, the noise only happen when in gear, and happen both accerlerating and decelerating, but the noise sound only a little different. went to junk yard, found a $250 4cyl mt tranny, 30 days warranty, repeated the exercise, this time only took 10 hours of my labor, and my car is back on the road, no more whining noise. so basically i throw $500 in parts, and 30 hours of my labor (i am not in automotive repair field, i am an EE, working in computer field, with a little knowledge on fixing car from watching my mechanic friends)
