Do you mean you also get 20 mpg only?

yea i think all 4cylinder solara get 20 mpg city and 28 on highway

Yeah, I'm getting 20mpg average, so if I walk all city, I get like ~18mpg.
Anyways, I think the problem with the mpg is not the engine, it's the transmission. Do you happen to have an automatic?
And maybe you're driving it too harshly? I once drove it hard and got 15mpg at the pump.

Anyways, instead of trying to beef up the engine, I suggest you get another car, or customize the outlook of it (lip kit / lowering), because the solara is built for ride comfort, not really performance. Trust me, I'm in the same situation as you are, except I get worse gas mileage.

+1
completely agree dude.. thats why i went audio crazy hah

I can't believe I missed this thread. Try 5S-FE turbo....or something like that in the title next time LOL. Anyway I would say that a supercharger is the best way to go, if you can find a used 5S-FE RIPP kit for a decent price. You can always do a 3S-GTE swap, assuming you do your own work, for not too much more than doing a supercharger, or turbo, really that has the most potential.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

*SPEAKERS*
jbl is definately good but claiming they're the best is a matter of opinion (the stock paper cones suck compared to anything decent aftermarket) and there are are definately better speakers out there.
personally - i'm an alpine wh0re. as a company theyre not overly expensive and the sound quality/durability is excellent. everything except for my subs is alpine in my car..
Infinity makes great speakers all around and in my opinion are very similar to alpine in the three previously mentioned categories - their reference components are crystal clear and very affordable
ill go ahead and speak for quicksev6 and metion diamond audio. theyre pretty pricey for their higher end stuff, but supposedly one of the best out there hands down.
cant forget JL audio - theres a reason you see them in show cars all the time
thats pretty much it for speakers that i would allow in my car (if i missed any fellas, chime in :))

*SUBWOOFERS*
Alpine (mostly type R and X) - a lil pricey but enough power to rattle your molars loose
JL - i've had 2 12'' JL W-2 series subs, they were older and i was inexperienced.. i think they were something like 200 watts rms, 800 max, and i realllyyy overpowered them sending em 500 watts rms apiece. They stood up to the abuse for over a year before one quiit, but even with just one it was more then loud enough
Infinity - never personally owned a set, but i've heard/seen em, and just like their speakers, very high quality not too pricey
Kenwood - i just purchased my first set of kenwood subs, they were on sale from crutchfield. after asking people on here and having most people tell me to stick with alpine, i was pretty skeptical. i researched it heavily and there wasnt much difference between the type Rs and my kenwoods, 100 watts RMS and 200 dollars but they other specs were similar. Ill speak with confidence to say that my current subs are more than loud enough for me, even in a completely dynamatted trunk they have enough power to shake the exhuast heat shield.
Diamond Audio - check out their site, their subs are beeeffyyyy

theres a few more reputable brands out there, sorry for the longwided post, if you have any more questions pm me or prodigy79 - hes got a sick setup in his 04, boston acustic components
(theyre good too) and type Rs i believe

May I also add that you'll definitely need an AMP for a good sound system, for most head units are not strong enough to push a set of decent speakers.
From what I heard, Hifonics are pretty good amplifiers, also JL Audio. And I heard Kenwood makes pretty durable amps cos they put fans on them.

There's also a thread here about how to do sound deadening on your car. Basically, put stuff inside your doors and panels to make your car sound even quieter while driving and make your speakers sound better.

About performance, there's always a choice of swapping in another engine, but I'm thinking you might as well buy another car.

Afterall, please don't mod your car too much unless you want to keep your car for a long period of time, because when you sell it, you will either lose your mods or take forever to put your car back to stock.

harmon kardon is a great company, its what bimmers come with stock (upgrded audio package i believe) but i've never heard of anyone buying their stuff aftermarket. sound deadening your entire car is one of those tasks that isnt exactly HARD persay, just very very time consuming/exhausting. . . i did it this summer.

as far as amps go, again, i love alpine vpower amps for anything above 2 channels. and if you're scrounging for cash, Lanzar Audio, is an up and coming company, definately considered a 'budget buy,' but when you can pay 200 or less for 2000 watts max, 500 rms, im not complaining. My amp was dirt cheap and sounds phenomenal to me. I wouldnt reccomend experimenting with too many budget buy companies... but i will definately stand by lanzar - theres another member on here with a 4000 watt lanzar amp too, but i forget who
