Diesel swap

Diesel swap

Postby derronicc » Tue Jul 08, 2008 8:20 pm

I was talking to a friend of mine and starting thinking if it was possible to do an engine swap with a diesel. I have a 2001 Toyota Solara SLEV6 and am not too familiar with the engine setup. Can someone answer this...

Im not mechanic but from what I know it's not possible, motors are made different.

Diesel engines use compression ignition.
Gas engine is an internal combustion engine with spark ignition.

I don't know what the gaz price in USA, but here in Canada diesel is more expensive.

I travel to NH (hampton beach) in 2 days, so I will be able to see by myself if diesel is cheaper there! lol.. :D

x 2 although i don't think it would be a very good idea considering the amount of work that will need to be done. You'd be better of buying something with a diesel in it.

When I see a question like this I am curios as to the reasoning behind it. Are you thinking of running a Bio-Diesel car? I have a buddy that bought a beat down diesel VW and runs fry oil.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

I am just curious to find out what can possibly be done to a Solara. The main reason was to make everyones jaw drop with a diesel Solara. The torque is incredible as well.

I don't think my jaw will drop if I ever saw a diesel Solara. I would be thinking "why the hell did he/she do this to their Solara? With diesel being $5/gallon" lol
You should probably attempt what others have only imagined, converting it to RWD or dropping a Supra motor under the hood, that would make some jaws drop, or you could just buy a SC300 :sweet:

any gains from a diesel is gonna require a massive turbo, which could have went on a solara in the first place and would probably get equal amounts of "oh crap!"

^With 10,000 pound towing capacity and air brakes!

Seriously; there's too much work involved for not a great amount of gains, and like 1gSE said, not really impressive other than the fact that your car is going to sound like either a 70s Benz, a Kenworth truck or somewhere in between.

I meant the ones owned by average people... The ones that are as well-maintained as your average Pedo-Van or Chevy Astro...

The ones where the engine is almost as loud as a lawnmower, but sounds like a rhythmic torrent of muted fireworks with the occasional louder bang, plus shrill of a slipping belt, and probably haven't been washed since it's left the dealership lot.

Now the ones in that video, minus the black smoke, seem to be in MUCH better repair than the ones I see.
