Resistor value for EGR CEL

Resistor value for EGR CEL

Postby SolaraPete » Sun Jun 15, 2008 12:24 am

I recently installed my s/c and opted to go without the EGR, but i hate staring at the CEL. I've tried searching, and seen posts indicating a resistor can just be wired in to clear the code but no value seems to be listed. Anyone help me out?
Also, which of the three wires does it connect to?

Why without the EGR?
The difference between the factory one and the TRD one is very minimal.
You can get a used one off eBay for $10 or so. And it will fit.
I took pictures of the auto tube difference, I'll host them later.

I'll let you know later. I forgot the exact value so I need to take a look at the bands on mine to see. It;s something like 10k 1/2ohm 5% or something.

I'll let you know later.

I didnt install the EGR because:
1. From my understanding it robs a bit of power.
2. I dont see a need to be emissions compliant (no tests in IL).
3. Why recycle exhaust gases back into my motor? - (it likes fresh cold air better )
So, my question to you would be, why do you run wih an EGR?

I actually did this WELL before I put the SC on my car, and I felt a LITTLE bump in power ont he extreme low end (under 2500 RPM's).

I forgot the exact resistance and stuff, but go to Radio Shack and get it. I am SURE it's either 10 OR 10k ohm, so with that, just match up the colors of mine and it should be fine. I think it;s Gold Orang Black Brown.

Ok, looking at a wesite, so it should be the following: 5% 10kohms
10000 Ohms or 10 KiloOhms
1 Brown 2 Black 3 Orange

Oh, to add. It WILL keep the CEL off (had it for over a year now I thnk, CEL on, but cause I blew a GD knock sensor, again, the other day). BUT the car still does not read "emissions ready", which is the part I have yet to figure out. I have another year before my emmisions is due to figure it out.

From what i gather, the EGR gas temperature probe electrical connector is the place where we need the resistor on our cars, the same as the one illustrated.

I am trying to find out what size resistor we would need to cancel the code. My Haynes manual lists the following temp readings and resistance measurements in respect to the EGR gas temp sensor:

122 degrees: 64-97 k-ohms
212 degrees: 11-16 k-ohms
302 degrees: 2-4 k-ohms

Im no electrical engineer, so Im not positive what that means  Where is Midias when I need him?

EDIT:
It sounds like if you use a resistor for the medium range, it will cancel the code. He said a resistor anywhere between 11 and 16k ohms should do the trick. I dont have my car at home right now, but Ill be going to radio shack to pick up some resistors and try this out as soon as I have my car! Hope that helps you guys and I hope it works...

My friend was doing a resistor on his forrester, so I tried one of his but the value must have been wrong because Im still getting a code. Thats the info from the haynes manual though. good luck!

I must be smog compliant. (Biggest reason!) If I was 1 mile down the road I would not have to be.

There is also much discussion that EGR helps to reduce engine ping by keeping a minimal temp. in the intake chamber.

Read what sebas posted here: http://www.solaraguy.com/viewtopic.php? ... hlight=egr

lol

engine ping...that's what a good fuel system + fuel management is for....

egr for a stock car = fine

egr for a car looking for power = waste of time

Since i passed inspection....err or got passed, and i am good for another 2 years, i might be looking into bypassing the egr this Aug.

King, everytime your post are so summarized, why don't you elaborate more with some logical explanations ??

1: robbing power? I'm sure the system does not recirculate at full throttle.

2: I'm sure one reason "the Law" hates modders is that they feel that they are exempt from emissions standards.

3: if you're gonna have a resistor hanging and banging around your engine bay, at least put some electrical tape on it so it won't ever short out.
