exhaust dilemma

exhaust dilemma

Postby Akfahad » Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:44 pm

I wanted to get your guys' opinion on this, and I kinda need your opinion's quick since I have to tell the exhaust guy what I want him to do by tomorrow morning. My JP headers are now on (looks great btw), the JP y-pipe will be going on as well, however, he is going to cut the piping so I can remove the catalytic at will, if I want to.

Now my question is, should I leave my 2.5" Apexi WS catback on there as is or should I have him fabricate a 3" catback? I'm going to keep the Apexi WS muffler and tip (just because I like how it looks), so the 3" piping will go all the way up to the muffler and I know JP has dyno proven results with the 3" piping. Those of you with the JP setup or those who have a 3" exhaust, how bad is the affect on lower end Tq after going to 3"?

Also, if you recommend me going the 3" way, what kind of resonator would you recommend I get - preferably a magnaflow since that's what he's got readily available (if they even make another type of resonator, i don't know).

Thanks for any input.

i dont feel like my low end is hurting much at all with 3"... the other thing you could do is get the apexi ws2 universal muffler with a 3" inlet and sell your apexi on the boards- then you make some money back and dont have a bottleneck at the muffler. I actually just bought an apexi to have installed on my JP catback because i dont like the magnaflow muffler.

I believe the JP setup has two 18" resonators and the sound is pretty quiet IMO... one would probably be fine. good luck bro!

^^yeah, I suppose I could do that, but I can't wait for the parts to come in and need it done tomorrow. So far, it looks like it's gonna be the 3", and thanks for letting me know about the resonators Damon. Maybe I'll go with a 16", if not, then the longest I'll go would be 18".

3"....there really isn't such a thing as loss of low-end torque when you've got boost...the 3" will only help throughout the entire power band and especially on top...

how much power are you putting down with the 2.5" right now?

With those mods, 3" sounds right!

last time i went to the dyno, my tuner had to fix his dynojet so his readings were off. only way i know this is because it said the car put down close to 360whp (or whatever it was, its on my cardomain), which is not possible. But i've got to be close or over 250 though.

well, got the car back today....everything is good, the car feels awesome! Those JP headers really let the car breathe so much better. 2nd gear was spinning pretty much up until around 4.5-5k rpm's. Only thing I don't like is that the 3" exhaust pipe hangs sooo low. The pipe as it is now is probably 1-2" away from the RSB, so even if I wanted to, I don't think I could raise it any higher. Unless you guys got another idea? I'll post some pix once I get my camera back.

Oh, and for anybody's future reference on installing the headers, the engine will have to be tilted a few inches forward in order for the rear headers to be put in.

thats good to know. any ya may have somthing about teh size being to close to teh RSB. i have had a clanking sound from my rear end since i got the car and even replaced one and tightened and retightened my swway bar links and thats not workin. i suppose the exhaust may be hitting the rsb over bumps.
