how to make centercaps black?

how to make centercaps black?

Postby woa_its_j3ff » Mon Jun 02, 2008 12:04 am

Okay first time doing this not sure how..
I hate my "silver/chrome whatever" center caps . I want to get it black like the rest of the face on my rim.
How to do it? I assume to take off centercaps you gotta take off the wheel and then pop it out.
Question is how do I get it black?
do I sand it down (with what grit?) for how long? and what kind of paint?

any advice, tips, anything.. let me know.

Thank you in advance.

here is some help:
(jacked it from Tracy's thread)
Image

or where can I get blank black centercaps? and how can I know what size since I know centercaps vary in size.

id just pop them off and sand them maybe with a very fine grit sandpaper, then shoot them with paint and clear coat.

Use a liquid etching solution from an auto paint supply store - especially if they are chrome and have any detail on them.

and what is that for?..

well my center cap the very center is black but like the outer ring part is a silver finish or whatever, but it's not a smooth finish all the way around either, parts of it has tiny bumps all over it (giving it a light sandpaper feel).

sand them down to make the surface rough. spray 2 layers of adhesive promoter. Then 3 layers of paint. Then 2-3 layers of clear coat and call it a day.

WIJ - are they plastic or metal?

Etching solution works like liquid sandpaper to get in the cracks, bumps and crevasses where sandpaper along won't reach.

It's not rocket science here... just common sense. ;)

Ehh....
They're just stickers on top of the TSW center caps. lol.
I did buy 4 new TSW center caps for my rims, but i need to figure out a way to take off the decal bubble from TSW and get TRD ones made.

see the problem is guys I'd much rather just get blank black center caps. any idea where to get them? And how can I know the size of what fits? (only way is to pop off and measure or what?)

also if i can't get blank black centercaps, where do I buy all this stuff Kevin (Toymzfe) was talking about?

And Jeff (Pixel) . the part I want black is metal, not plastic.

If its just brushed metal just spray the self etching primer, spray it black, and clear it. I don't see why you would want to buy black centercaps.

it really shouldnt be this big of an ordeal- just spray them. if it doesnt hold up well, spray them again. Look on ebay for black centercaps for your brand of wheels or check out their website, most wheel brands list their centercaps on their website.
