It's all good man, Anyways, I looked around under the hood today and found the fuel filter up by the brake master cylinder and where the clutch cylinder would be if I had a manual transmission. Doesn't seem to hard to replace, release fuel pressure (take gas cap off) and disconnect fuel lines and remove filter, then reversal for new filter right? I'll also try the resetting ECU with nicer driving habits. Hopefully this will improve my mileage from 16mpg.


Oh and like I said earlier, I found a wix filter at the auto store, so I'm gonna pick that up on Wednesday.

Just checked my tires pressure and its all about 28-32 except for the rear left. That one is in the early 20's. I'll be doing all this work this weekend. I'll report back once its all said and done.

As above stated...for the time before you try to calculate your mpg, you have to FILL TO FULL.

Yep, did just that and used the odometer; the onboard display tends to maybe lie a little, but then again, I always used 18.5 gal in my calculations.

Ok, what!? You're saying your odometer lies to you? And you use 18.5 gallons in your calculations? So you're also calculating it wrong like the OP. As stated several times above, that's the only way to calculate your MPG.

DaZanY4002, no problem, more iterations might clear it up. Except you'd only need to write down your odo reading if you don't have a trip meter, which I'm sure everyone does.

Lastly, relieve fuel pressure from the rail. Opening the gas cap isn't going to do jack. Pull fuse for fuel pump, then crank away for 10 seconds, then bust open that banjo bolt. You don't want fuel sprayed all over you and your car do you?

I got a 125cc scooter for my gas mileage. I'm going to use it as my daily driver. 60MPH and 95MPG Maintenance is extremely low and easy as well. Fun to drive too

Well, I have a question. I've heard I have to relieve the pressure before changing the filter, but would it be a bad spray of pressure if I just disconnected the filter and caught the excess gas in a tub? Better than killing power to fuel pump, then running the engine till it stalls to remove fuel from the lines, IMO.

Oh and also, Going tomorrow to get the Wix Filter.

Once you relieve the pressure through the gas cap, that should be it, some gas will drip out when you start removing the filter, but no spray.

But I was trying to find out the Miles per gallon, from the whole tank.

if you want to find that out, then you're going to have to run her until she runs out of gas.

otherwise, take the ODO miles, and then divide by however much it is you fill up with (the amount that was used up = the amount that you are able to put in)

i routinely get about 290-310 miles per 'tank' of gas, but that is on about a 15.x gallon fill (approx 20 mpg).

yes the tank is 18.5 gallons, but the warning light tends to come on at about 15 gallons used. which means that you have about 50-80 miles left, depending on how aggressively you drive (just so you know, in case your light comes on in bum-screw-nowhere, and need to lookout for a gas station).

It's either the pump fuse or some AM2 fuse, I forgot which one exactly. It'll crank but it won't start, so it'll just relieve the fuel pressure, you won't be running the engine on what fuel is left in the lines. I'll go look to see what fuse exactly in a bit.

^^ According to my haynes manual, there is an EFI main relay and a fuel fuse under the hood. If pulling a fuse, I'd planned on just pulling the relay but not sure.

I heard your suppose to change your fuel filter once a year if you commute the average 15,000 miles a year, if it was the original fuel filter that could be your problem.

Did you already replace it? Are you seeing better mpg now?

replacing it tomorrow. I redid my calculations with my receit like someone earlier told me to and actually its gettin 21mpg. still i'm gonna replace it for better mpgs. So i'll report back tomorrow.

Be Carefull guys, if u havnt replaced ur fuel filter for a long time, it may be rusted on like mine was...U will definitly need some teflon tape (thread tape).

And be carefull, u can strip the nut if its rusted on!

From what I've been told about in-tank fuel pumps from various car guys... Is that when the tank get's low, your making the fuel pump run harder.

I know my parents '87 Mazda 323 burned one up in '89(Only car they bought new) and dad would get close to empty. He pulled the pump and it was burned up. So he asked around and was told that in-tank fuel pumps work much harder when there is 1/4 or less in the tank. After replacing it, he's never let the tank get below 1/4 and it's still on the 2nd pump.
