tachmeter problem

tachmeter problem

Postby SolaraHop » Mon Apr 21, 2008 5:57 pm

I have my 2004 Solara just for a week, and I guess I did not see it before, but the tach show inaccurate readings: when engine idles the needle drops below 0,
At 40miles/h it’s about 400 RPM and it goes up to 1K -1.2K when shifts.
What can be the problem? Help.

Unfortunately found other unrelated problems too… this sucks.
I’ll search forum in hope to find answers otherwise you’ll see me here often asking for help. :(

SH,

If you purchased your car from a dealer your issues might be covered under a warranty. Many used car dealers (especially new car dealerships) offer 90 day warranties on all used cars.

If you purchased from a private party then you're out of luck, Caveat Emptor.

Cheers

yes, Caveat Emptor.
After some reading here found that the camshaft position sensor may be a suspect. Where is it on L4 engine?
Any thing else can cause this problem?

OK found the problem.
First reading ECM using ODB2 in real time found that RPM are correct, so this has pointed to the tach, taking it a part found that the needle was loose. A drop of glue after the needle was placed in in correct position corrected my problem.
