Crack WindShield Help! (gen 2 solara se)

Postby lemmez » Mon Apr 14, 2008 1:55 pm

Hey guys.

Problem: i have a 10 inch long crack across my windshield (god i hate big rigs)

The time has come to replace the windshield and i have two options.

1.) replace the glass with oem toyota glass (i got quoted $1200 just for the glass alone)
2.) replace the glass with non oem glass.

-I'm trying to get my insurance to cover it but its looking unlikely that they will.

The questions are:

Has anyone ever replaced their windshield with non oem toyota glass?

Was there a big difference in quality and viability?

If my insurance does not cover the damage, is it still worth getting the oem toyota glass and why?

Thank you guys for all the help. I will not be posting pictures b/c it makes me depressed. :(

My car has non-OEM glass and it's perfect. Just depends on who you go to.

What price range is a "good deal" for glass and install from a reputable installer?

man don't waste your money on OEM. I would get an aftermarket one. OEM is just way too expensive, especially with gas being 4/gal. I would think glass is glass, but if you have the Temp gauge on your rear view mirror it will cost extra because of that.

Just out of curiosity, why won't your insurance company cover it? Do you have comprehensive or only liability? Please don't tell me you have liability only on a Gen 2.

I have full coverage. Another family member used up the policy for the windshield. I'm not really sure how it all works. It might be covered it might not. Still waiting for a definite answer.

With my insurance, a non-OEM windshield was free. If I went with the Toyota windshield, it would have cost my deductible.

i feel your pain man.

i didnt have my car for more than 4 DAYS before i got a pretty big chip in the windshield... right in my line of vision. THEN, to top it off a second one 2 days later, smaller, but still chipped. 2 in less than one week having the car. It happened this winter, and i am waiting to get it replaced, once all the roads are clear from all the winter salt and sand.

but, i do not have a price yet. i can re-post a quote once i get one. sorry no help yet.

Take a look at this thread on fragile windshields on Gen 2's.

the the insurance claims adjuster to go jump off the grand canyon

tell him to specifically tell you, and show youwhere re in your policy it says they will NOT cover a 2nd windshiled,

its a different car therefore different hazard, they must cover and replace to oem specifications, why are you paying a monthly premium for full coverage for then???

(i work for a large car insurance company.)

I KNOW it will turn out great - because this guy does the paint and body work for Chip Foose (OverHaulin) - check out Lanzini Body Works in Huntington Beach, CA

BTW - Ins is paying for all of my work.
