Tire suggestions for a 99 Lara?

Postby solaragirl92 » Sun Mar 23, 2008 12:31 pm

I just bought the car and it has 2-3 different kinds of tires on it :o
The one I did the most research on was the Kumho, which seems like a decent and inexpensive tire. Pepboys Definity on sale this week, I don't know anything about that tire. Or Costco has BF Goodrich Touring for about $100 each installed. I want something thats quiet and does well in the snow. Any suggestions or experience you've had with these tires, or can recommend ones you like?
Thanks

I used to use cheap Kumhos. They kept blowing belts and forming bubbles in the sidewalls (I went through about 6 tires. 3 got bubbles before they wore down.)

If you get a good lot of snow in MN, check out the Dunlop Winter Sports, which are Performance winter tires. Thats what I used this year as my winter tire, and are really good at ice/snow, but their actually better than any tires I've ever used on my stock wheels in dry as well. I think they were about $80ea from Tire Rack.

Yeah Jon is right. I use my original wheels with snow tires in the winter and i have another set of wheels with khumo ast for the spring summer. If you get alot of snow you really dont want a so called all season tire you want snow tires.

The more and more I think about it, I may just be keeping my truck for winter driving in the snow storms (and hauling things too). But I want a tire that has good traction in rain and slushy conditions. I try to stay off the roads during the really snowy days, until the plows come out (usually leaving the slush), and since I don't work during the winter, its not as big of a problem to stay put. So a quiet, dependable tire is number one priority.
Thanks guys

being that i'm from texas, i can't really comment on snow-reliabilitly...

but i use michelin pilot exalta all terrain, and they're a more solid tire than my old falkens.

falkens zeix were my previous tire, but the rubber was so soft that i balded them out after about 20k miles. great traction though (i think the texas heat was too much for them, which may not be a factor for you)

the pilot exalta's have been on the ride for about 8 months now, and i haven't had any problems (sans a flat from driving over a nail, but that got patched up and they're still holding strong)

I had issues with my kumho's as well. I recommend finding something else.

I recommend Yokohama AVS ES100s. Excellent tires and cheap too. Or get Falken Ziex 512s. Another great tire. The Falkens are quieter under load (I used to run canyons here in SoCal with my WRX) but the AVSs last longer. I say go for the Yokos.

Or if you want REALLY good tires, go Dunlop. Made in Germany. Best tires I've ever used (SP Sport 2000s)

I am HUGE on Nitto Neo Gens or Nitto 555's. The best thing to do is go here: http://www.discountedwheelwarehouse.com ... _Tires.cfm

find the tire size you want and the brand, then print it out with the price and take it to discount/america's tire to have it price matched. And you'll have the best price.

By the way, i am a big hater on falken ziex 512. i've popped way more than i have with Neo Gens. Of course i was on 215/35 series. Nitto also has a better side wall that Falken to protect your wheels.

We have had the falken 512 on the solara. Only got about 20k miles out of them, even rotating every 5k miles. They are discontinued and the 912 is the replacement. I am leary about getting them.

This time Im looking at the cooper cs4. 12/32nds tread depth. They are non directional.

http://www.coopertire.com/html/products ... w=60&rd=16

http://www.motortrend.com/features/cons ... 4_touring/

The T-rated version carries a UTQG of 780 AA (640 AA for the 14-inch), the H-rated version a rating of 560 AA and the V-rated tire a UTQG of 520 AA, said Pecoraro.

The CS4 will be available in 29 sizes (T-rated) and 31 sizes (H- and V-rated), to fit 14- through 18-inch wheel diameters. It will be produced in Cooper’s Tupelo, Miss., and Albany, Ga., tire plants.

The tire’s R-Tech (Response Technology) construction and extended bead filler offers enhanced handling, control and steering response, according to Charles Yurkovich, vice president of global technical operations at Cooper. The new tire essentially applies ultra-high performance technology in a broadline touring tire, Yurkovich stated.

“This tire is the most thoroughly performance-tested passenger tire in the history of Cooper,” said Yurkovich, adding that the tire has seen more than 10,000 hours of indoor wheel testing and more than 5 million miles of collective vehicle testing.

BTW if anyone is looking for used tires, 205 60 16 is so common that a couple of the used tire dealers in this area are throwing good ones away.
