seperate axle from bracket?

seperate axle from bracket?

Postby rewmomi » Sun Mar 02, 2008 10:45 am

I am trying to replace my tranny and my right axle is in the way of this process. I have tried many techniques to get it out but it wont work. The only option I have now is to replace the axle and bracket. But I am open to any other ideas on how to remove the axle, or a cheap axle bracket?

to get the passenger side axle off, you need an impact gun....then you take out the outer axle and take the half-shaft and the rear engine mount/ carrier bearing with the tranny/engine

???

ummm....if you have to ask that, are you sure you're ready to tackle this job??

the impact gun is for taking the outer axle from the half-shaft...then you can pull the entire engine/tranny out through the top

although according to the shop manual you can take "slide" the half-shaft out of the carrier bearing, for most of us, it's basically impossible since there is too much rust, etc. usually, you have to remove the half-shaft with the carrier bearing and get it pressed out at a shop

yeah i am not doing this a mechanic is though. There is so much rust inbetween the the axle shaft and the bracket that they cant take it out. They even tried hammering the actual axle out of the bracket but it wont budge. So the have to take the whole bracket out including the axle and get a new bracket.

ah...

well, you could get a new carrier bearing, but you can also take it to an axle shop to get it pressed out...

I presume that they are taking the tranny out of the car through the bottom? then why do they even have to take out the axle? they should be able to slide the tranny over and off of the half-shaft splines and then drop the tranny, no?

not sure...usually not too much, though labor is different in different places

when I got mine done, because during my 5-speed swap, I needed to put a 5-speed half-shaft on to my automatic (and for some reason, different) carrier bearing and mount, it cost me $50 cash

this was in Toronto

if you intend to just replace the CV boot, the axle doesn't need to come out of the differential, just separate the axle, and regrease a good one back.

if you really intend to remove the axle from differential, i've done it a few time at home, without any power tool.

for the 30mm axle nut that hold axle in the hub, i bought a 6 ft pipe from home depot fence dept, use a 1/2" craftman ratchet, and a 1/2" deep socket impact 30mm socket. don't jackup the car yet, pull the parking braket, home some 1 step on the brake padel hard, i applied about 50lb of force at the end fo the pipe 6 ft X 50 lb = about 300lb ft of force to break the nut free.

also it is very hard to separate axle from bracket while the axle is still in the vehicle, rust frozen them together badly. i managed to take the whole bracket + axle out of the vehicle on a 4 cyl camry. and when the axle and bracket is out of the car, hit the axle straight with a 12 lb hammer hard about 10 or 20 times before it will slide out, my ear was ringing for a while. if you where try to hit the axle under the vehicle, hitting it at an angle, forget it, unless u can hit it straight, it might have a chance to come out,

yeah, for some people, they can also do it on a lift (I think, hence the little notches on the half-shaft), but then you also have to remember to check the bearing, etc to make sure that nothing was damaged, since it has to then be done on an angle

generally speaking, it's not recommended
