I just got a 99 SE and the only thing wrong with the body is the emblems. The chrome is corroded and they look like sh*t.

I was wondering if there was an easy way to repair them, such as repainting, how you would go about removing them if need be, and if there are any kits out there that handle the swap out to a new set of emblems

in case there is any confusion of 'emblem' i am referring to the badging on the car, the toyota emblem on the trunk, solara on the trunk, SE etc

thanks guys, I didn't see anything when I tried searching but I apologize if I missed something that's already on here. new to the site

Welcome to SolaraGuy!

Your emblems are corroded? That shouldn't be. Chrome is a plating that resists corrosion. That is to say, chrome itself will not rust.

By the way, chrome is not a paint. It is a process of dips or baths into different chemicals. I know this because I used to work at the factory that makes craftsman tools. The chrome plating area was pretty cool.

I guess my suggestion to you is to buy new emblems. Check ebay or maybe a dealer if you really need them.

just remove them if you like a claner/modified look, thats how some people go on the forum. There are no pegs or holes on any of the emblems, so theyre easy to remove!

thanks for all the advice. i just took off all the emblems today. considering it is only 40 degrees out i used a hair dryer to warm em up but everything went ok. all it needs is to be rubbed out a little to blend away the outline of the emblems.

thanks again, next step is redoing the OEM grill

Chrome and gold does dull over time. The gold emblems on my mom's '96 lexus look like copper now. Chrome polish will restore the finish, but if you are just debadging the car this info is pointless.

^^ i agree...before i debadged my lara, i could definitely tell that the previous owner always parked the car in the sun, facing the same way....the driver side emblems were a dull, copperish-orange/yellow, while the pass. side emblems were a nice shiney gold plated color.

IMO, debadging the side and rear emblems is the way to go...especially considering that a full set of new emblems is around 120 from the stealership, and they only provide minor cosmetic appeal.

wait and see if the shaved emblem look appeals to you. if not, you can always go back and get the emblems and put them back on, later.

I removed my emblems for few days and I was feeling naked lol

So I bought new emblems.
Mine were gold and very ugly, the gold were peeling/fading..

so my new emblems are chrome. It looks better for my taste. But Im sure that with nice gold mags it would look great with gold emblems!

I bought a OEM chrome grill from toyota.
I bought the "Solara" the "cowboy".
I didn't wanted the "toyota" letters back on the trunk.

Toyota emblems are expensive from the toyota dealer.
I still need to buy the "SE" and "V6", but they are $20 each ($80).
I will probably shave them.

If you want the $0 option, just shave all with goo-gone and a fishing line.
But a friend (cop) told me that it's not "legal" to shave the emblems, cops need to know what's the model/brand of your ride. They will think that it's a Acura lol.

^^^ the cops can always check your insurance card to determine what kind of vehicle it is. or they can run the plates to see what kind of vehicle is registered.

and parking violations are a whole other category of tickets, from my understanding, separate from moving violations. and if the cops can't figure it out when i'm not there to guide them through it, then the ticket deserves to be dismissed based on faulty information.

unless you get a renova, and a new steering wheel, there will be emblems around anyhow. and if you do have a renova and a new steering wheel....well...it's still hard for me to feel sympathy for the ticket-issuing sect of the po-lice.

haha thats 1/2 my goal. i originally was going to replace the emblems with new ones, but after taking all of em off i love the way it looks and the renova is the next step. the only toyota references will be on the steering wheel and under the hood. why give the cops a helping hand in identifying my vehicle?
