Rear brake strength

Rear brake strength

Postby anwagbo3000 » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:05 pm

Whenever i use my rear brakes, they dont stop my back wheels the way i think they should, they sort of squeak to a stop, as i am expecting them to stop immediately, do you think i should get better brake pads or renew them, or would better rotors be the key, and if i change my back brakes then should i change my front ones as well.

so basically all around brakes or all around rotors or both and what could be my rear brake problem

Front breaks will always grab harder. There are ways to more balance them out but its not cheap.

Is your car a drum rear or rotor? If drum then thats the problem. If rotor then make sure the surface is good and get better pads but do not expect them to perform like the front.

By what you wrote, I'm assuming you're using your hand brake to stop.

I also assume you don't have an understanding about how a hand brake works: the hand brake IT DOES NOT OPERATE THE CALIPER.

It operates pads inside the hub that expand out to stop the hub from moving. Only useful when in neutral or stopping from 10mph or less :drinking:

Like others responding to your post I'm a little confused but, also like the others, assume you're trying to e-brake.

The lever would be better called a 'parking' brake than an 'emergency' brake. The pads on the shoes aren't really designed to stop the car from speed and would wear out pretty quickly.

Pull a rear wheel, remove the brake caliper then pull the disk/drum assembly off. You'll see very quickly that you don't really have a problem, just a misunderstanding.

Cheers

Your not supposed to balance them out, you do 70 percent of your stopping with the front brakes, thats how it is, and thats how its supposed to be. Changing this would mess up the breaking time. I think the engineers at Toyota know what they are doing, and you shouldn't be messing with something as dangerous as breaks. Remember, your life can depend on your breaks functioning correctly.

Well, one, I'm not trying to drift.........lol........, two, I was just trying to figure out the difference between front braking power and rear braking power, and I also was wondering why my front brakes performed better than my rear brakes, and I was trying to figure out if I could get them to perform at the same level, meaning, getting my rear brake level to perform at the same strength as my front brake level, but I guess I need to do more research on something like this
