My wife has something wrong with her 1st gen solara (1999).. wondering if anyone could narrow it down to something before we take it in to get ripped off.

The problem:
when turning it on, it will turn over but then dies quickly, then she'll have to restart. But if she puts it in gear fast enough, it will stay running, but also while driving it will get a little jerky from time to time. It feels like it's going to leave us stranded. I am thinking dirty fuel injectors or transmission is going out. the car has about 130k miles on it But I'm not a car buff under the hood either. any suggestions? Know of any trustworthy shops in SAN DIEGO that could take a look at it for less than the dealership? Thanks for any replies or PMs!

is the Check Engine Light on?
If so get it scanned at autozone or something like that and find out what the code is and figure out whats wrong from there.

Sounds like the Idle Air Bypass Valve (sticking - carbon build up) happens on my car too. When you start it and quickly put your foot on the gas pedal you can keep it running. I usually rev the engine up a few times and then it usually stays idling. As far as the jerking while driving probably not related to the first concern.

actually it is on, but it's been on for two months or so. she had it checked before and they told her it was some minor sensor problem and that it would cost alot of labor to fix. so she decided not to. I guess i'll be taking it down to autozone later today and see what they come up with on the diagnostics.

Is there a post in this forum with all of the diagnostic codes? Or anyone know where i can find a list of them on the internet for the solara?

Sounds like either the Idle Air Bypass Valve or the fuel filter??
My dad's 1998 Camry does that once in a while, you can start it, and then it will run for a tad bit, and then die, then when you try to start again, once you have it just started you have to rev the engine a bit and it will stay runnin'.
Now that i think about that, it could be the Ilde Air Bypas Valve....

I agree, but it's not my car (it's the wife's), i'm not in it every day, and didn't know about it until a few days ago. I want her to take it to toyota, but she wants to save a few bucks and take it somewhere else. so if anyone knows of any shops in san diego that do good work for less than the dealership, lemme know. thx!

Do not take it to the deal, its a last resort unless you got money to throw away, First of all take it to autozone or any place that can read codes for you, then report back to us , and tell us what codes you are getting,, Here are the obd codes http://solaraguy.com/viewtopic.php?t=16 ... hlight=obd

To me, that actually sounds like a tune up problem. My friends truck did that same thing. (Jerking while driving, not the dieing issue) All it needed was some new $2 spark plugs. Ran like it was brand new afterwards. Its worth looking into IMO. If that isn't the problem, it is probably the idle air bypass valve like everyone has chimed in to say. Just my .02.

Here's a link to a diagram for P1153 & P1155 http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showt ... p?t=203699
