Stupid check engine light

Stupid check engine light

Postby vSolara » Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:00 am

Arrgh. I bought my 01 solara about 4 months ago used and everything was fine with it. Last month, we got an oil change, then a couple weeks later replaced the brakes. Havent messed around with it all, I dont know anything about cars, everything is stock. I was just driving it yesterday and the check engine light came on. Arrrgh!!! Well I guess we'll have to take it in to the shop. It drives like normal, I wonder why the light would have came on (gas cap is secure too).

thats exactly what needs to be done. if i had to guess its PO420. catalyst inefficency bank one or something of that nature. you need to get it scanned and see what code it is. Places like autozone will do it for free.

you don't need to take it into a shop, take it autozone first and get the CEL code read, at least that way you know what you'd be dealing with.

Suggestion

Postby JMSinMaryland » Sun Feb 10, 2008 12:56 pm

A Toyota dealer will charge you $70-$100 to read the code and tell you what's going on. An Autozone will scan the code for free and tell you what's going on.

Dang, $100 just to read it? Huh, so autozone will do it for free? That wouldnt be a bad idea. I'm just really worried this is going to need an expensive repair...

^^^ I Agree^^^

You can go to Autozone and rent a OBF II Reader (sp?). All they require is a security deposit (use a creditcard) that they will return when you return the reader. You Just plug it underneath the steering wheel (in the general area above the pedals) and turn it on. Get the code and look it up.

Hope it helps.
