Need a new tranny I think?

I was driving the car and the gears would not change utill it was about 4k rpm so i was at a stop light and the gear was on drive and it would not go. So I put it in park and then put it in drive and it worked but it would not pass the third gear. When I took the dip stick out from the tranny oil it was black and smelled like it was burned. I just got the car so I dont know when the last owner actually did a tranny oil change. So any suggestions on where to get one?

this is common to most toyotas. helps to warm the transmission/ protect it... actually my old camry would never shift into overdrive unless it was warmed up for at least a good 5 minutes.

Speak to whoever sold you the car before speaking to a transmission shop. Was it an as-is sale/purchase? How long ago did you buy it? Chances are if they didn't bother to flush the transmission fluid, the timing belt must be a string at this point, and you may have to make other major repairs. Seems like a major case of poor maintenance. Hopefully your troubles stop at the transmission but again, see if you could speak to the seller. Good luck.
