Oil question

Oil question

Postby Jakecallun20 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 8:42 pm

Hey. I am unsure of what type or weight of oil is in my car. I didn't do the last change and I am due for one. The last change was done under the previous owner's care. I know that I've had my car for a while, but I don't drive much so I just hit about 10k miles since last change, and I've been putting it off. So my question is, is it safe to put Mobil 1 Extended performance 5w-20 or 30 "fully synthetic" in? Will it cause leaks if my previous oil just happened to be conventional oil. Thanks Jake

mobile 1 is good, but expensive, i used castrol syntec fully synthetic and my car was running very well, it even unlocked extra power, conventional oil bites, and use 5w-30, whether its fully synthetic or not is up to you

Alright, I had already decided to go with castrol or mobil 1. So this shouldn't cause a leak in my car? Even if it was run with conventional?

139,376 Miles on the car. Yeah. I've heard that Royal purple isn't worth it.

I would highly suggest you change your oil right now, ESPECIALLY not know what was poured in before. I use Mobil 1 out of being a creature of habit. As I said before, the marketing gimmick of labeling a bottle "Fully Synthetic" is in name only--if it cost less than $10/bottle it's a blend.

Alright, I plan to change this weekend. I think I am going to go with Mobil 1 5w-30 , I've always heard good things about Mobil 1. And yeah, I know its not "Full" Synthetic, which is fine with me. I am pretty sure what I have now is conventional but I could be wrong. Will also buy a Mobil 1 oil filter for the car too.

Our cars can use either 5W-30 or 10W-30.
I use Castrol Fully Syntheic 5W-30 for the winter, and 10W-30 for the summer, i also use a Bosch oil filter.
Fully Syntheic oil is way better than regular oil.
Remember once you go to fully syntheic you can't go back to regular oil.
As for Royal Purple, It's the best if you got the money for that oil.
I got Royal Purple ATF in my tranny right now.

That's NOT true, you CAN go back to regular oil if you wish(IE: notice new leaks from the synthetic)......the oil companies started that bullshit to keep you from going back to to the cheap stuff!
And as for Royal Purple....Ive heard from many people and I read a few reviews stating that it's the shittiest of the synthetics.....Mobile 1 is supposed to be solid....but if if you want to go the true synthetic route, try Redline's synthetic oil (expensive and harder to find, but from what I hear, completely worth it).

I have a couple of friends who had even told me that if you go back to regular oil you have to flush the engine fully to get all the syntheic oil out.
Redline is good too.

Regular oil changes cost 20-25 dollars, with synthetic it costs about $60. But that's not dealership price, just what they would charge at the oil change station.

I think I'm going to switch over to Mobil 1.

Previously I was eyeing Top Secret's Fusion oil...but since the 'lara isn't even turbo'd I thought I'd go with something a little bit more conventional, not to mention readily available and cheaper...
