ABS and Traction Control idiot lights

ABS and Traction Control idiot lights

Postby BadAngel » Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:18 pm

I have a 2004 Toyota Solara SLE, and i recently got into an accident. The mechanical damage has been fixed, but they can not seem to get the ABS and Traction Control Idiot lights to turn off. Does anybody know exactly how to get these to turn off? Is there some sort of special method, or does it need to be hooked up to some computer at Toyota for them to reset it?

Press and hold in the Trip Odometer reset button while starting your car back up. That should clear the lights. If that doesn't work, then they didn't hook something back up properly.

The two systems are connected. If you can't get a reset, one of your ABS sensors may be hosed. That would flag both lights.

Is there some sort of trick to this? Is there some indication that it attempted to reset like a beep or a flicker? Also, would you happen to know where the ABS sensor on the front passenger tire is, if i cant get it to reset ill have the mechanic look for the sensor.

No, when you reset the ODO what it does is that the numbers blank out in straight dotted lines and then each one will disappear. You will see it when it starts it's sequence.

No beep or anything... just do it. If you did it right, the lights will go out.

Yes, well if there is a sensor problem, and they should in fact be on, are they going to go out and then come back, or are they just going to stay on?

and is this going to happen:

"No, when you reset the ODO what it does is that the numbers blank out in straight dotted lines and then each one will disappear. You will see it when it starts it's sequence."

UPDATE:
I got it to reset, and it did exactly as described. All of the numbers on the odometer turned into dashes and then it reset. Sadly, the idiot lights are still on, so i guess we haven't found the problem

How would i go about doing that? Is it what they do when you bring it to an automotive shop and they plug it into the computer, or can i do it myself?

You can pull the fuse #15 but don't quote me on that but I know for sure that you can reset the ECU by pulling the Negative battery terminal off and leaving it off for a min or two then reconnect it.

BA,

After checking the owners manual for your car it looks like the best advice you've received is to try and reset the car's computer. The simple way is to disconnect the battery for awhile but the 'best' way is to visit an auto supply that loans out a code checker (Autozone, Kragen). Not only will the checker (probably) try to zero in on your problem and tell you what to repair but you can also reset the light.

Keep in mind even after a reset the light will come back on if the problem hasn't been resolved.

Cheers

Yeah keep that in mind if the light comes back after you reset it then you need to diagnose it differently.

And you don't need to leave it disconnected all night, believe me 2-3 minutes is good enough.

alright guys, thanks a lot for the advice. I am going to try the battery thing first and if it comes back, then try the code checker.
