Gas pumping problem

Postby washxawayxevil@aim.com » Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:11 pm

Hey I am new to this forum and toyota's in general. I just kind of aquired this car, it is a 02 solara, my problem is that when you go to refuel and you pull the handle on the pump it pops almost instantly i have tried not pulling it all the way, and different angles and such and such, I took it to my work and my boss hooked it up to the computer to check for codes it hasnt registered any codes, is this a common problem? one thing i did notice is that when you take out the fuel cap typacally there is a little door that gets pushed back when you stick the nozzle in, there isnt one on this car but is there supposted to be? your help is greatly appreciated!!

Some gas pump handle have problems, I encountered the same situation a couple of times.

It is not the car that is the problem, it is the gas pump handle, your car is fine.

Welcome! :)

Yeah, happens to me from time to time, but repositioning the nozzle always fixes it.

I think all gas tanks have the little spring loaded cover for the hole to the fuel tank. If it weren't there, you could get debris in your tank. I'm sure one of the other Gen1 owners can look at their tank and tell you.

its been going on for about a month and we have been to at least 4 diff gas stations, and we have been to these stations previously with no problem, but can some one with a gen 1 let me know if that spring loaded door is there because if it is mine is gone meaning its problably in the filler tube causeing vacum issues.

There is a vacuum tube that runs to the tip of the nozzle spout on the bottom side. (The little hole at the tip) Depending of your car's fill pipe angle if that hole rests on top of it it cuts off the vacuum created by the venturi in the spout. This will cause the nozzle to shut off. Try to make sure the tip of the spout doesnt rest on the fill pipe.

It's not just your car or the pump hadle causing the problem. I just picked up a 99 and it has done it to me at every gas station I have gone to. It is a pain in the a**. The best part is when the gas spills out becuase it can not take the fuel. It takes me about 5 extra minutes each time I get fuel because I have to physicaly watch the amount of fuel I pump into it an let off before it overflows. This is on a almost empty tank and it happens as soon as I start to add fuel.

there must be something blocking the gas from going direclty to the gas tank, try pressing the gas handle half way or only quarter way, this will reduce the output of gas and hopfully avoid the "overflowing". This is not gonna solve your problem, but at least you wont have to keep trying every 5 seconds

good luck, and brig some feedback here if you ever find out whats the problem

Yes mine has the spring loaded trap door. There are also 3 vents, 2 are to the left and right of the hole and are equal size. There is 1 smaller vent hole above the filler hole.

ok so mine dosent have the spring door so my immediate guess would be it fell and is stuck in the filler tube causing vaccum issues, i guess the only step now would be to pull the tube and either replace it or just take out the door. :) thank you for your help. Ill keep you guys posted when I get around to it hopefully next weekend
