I get in my car today, turn the key and it tries to crank, all my electronics go haywire and then this weird repetitive ticking sound started, it didn't stop till I let go of the key. I don't know if this is caused by the battery, starter or some other part. I have my battery charging right now, will unplug it tomorrow. This pisses me off, My friend not 10 minutes before I got in the car called me and asked if Toyota's were reliable (hes trying to buy a new car) and I told him they were. I was very late for a meeting because of this. Any help with this problem is appreciated. Thx.

the weird repetitive ticking you're talking about is a dead battery. same happened to my car a year back when my system completely drained the OE battery o_O

Chris may be right ! I had an issue with my old '93 Camry. When I was turning the key I was hearing 1 tick everytime I was trying (on your side, you are hearing many). My problem was a little plug between the the battery to the starter that was not clean and strong enough. To solve the problem I had to unplug it and replug it...or play a bit with it and retry...

I'm hoping it is the battery, It just kinda took me by surprise. I have never heard that sound from a dead battery before. Not to mention my electronics shutting off then coming back on w/o touching them. I'll find out tomorrow.

The clicking is the starter crank probe extending out (or attempting to) a very minimal length not even reaching the flywheel. So it clicks when the probe returns from its millimeter(+/-) of travel. Now you know what a drained battery sounds like. Jump or compression start (manuals only) and you're good.

wow this exact same thing happened to me 2 days ago..

annoying ticking noise when i was trying to start the car..got my battery tested for free and they said it had 76 - something that stands for the amount of power.

your supposed to have a minimum of 600 something power so i bought a new one (ouch) and it worked fine

If anybody is gonna buy a battery, get an Optima Yellow or Red top, you won't be disappointed.

Yep its just a dead battery. Most toyotas make that clicking noise when the battery is dead. Same thing happened to me, i just bought a new one. So if you recharge your battery, or buy a new one you should be good to go.

Once you go Optima, you'll never want another stupid water battery ever again.
