Tranny Swap or 1mz Swap?

Tranny Swap or 1mz Swap?

Postby ReaDY-SeT-Go » Sun Dec 02, 2007 10:37 am

hey guys i finally saved up enough money and found a 1mz with low miles and my buddies at sinful enhancements are offering 3g's for either a 1mz swap or a tranny swap... but i havent asked yet what if i got a tranny swap for my 5SFE would it later on fit when i decided to swap in the 1mz? haha i SEARCHED guys i ended up getting confused with the L351 tranny's and all those cause i know i could just do the engine swap with some friends but what would you guys recommend getting first? my 5SFE only has 60k on it thats why im thinking if i should get a tranny swap first but i need it to still be bolt on when the 1mz comes in

if i had a 5s motor i would go w/ the 1mz motor. 3g is pretty pricey for a tranny swap or motor swap. how much are they charging you for labor? what the price on that 1mz? if your willing to travel i have a shop up here that could probably give you a better price.

Hands-down - do the engine swap and sell your old one to upgrade the tranny. ;)

I was extremely close to swapping to a manual on my gen 3 camry that has a 5sfe- luckily the subframe was rusted out and the shop talked me out of it. After stepping up to my solara with the 1mz, I can most definitely say that you probably dont want to spend the money on a manual for the 5sfe...

The 5sfe transmission might mate to the 1mz, but it wouldnt be able to handle the power from the v6. I believe that the 1mz trans bolts up to the 5sfe though, but Im not positive. The best thing to do IMO would be to find a donor car with the 1mz and trans available, then go from there.

a donor car would be a wrecked solara with trans and motor and all of the other parts you would need, for example.

I am not trying to piss on your Cheerios, but couldn't you do a 3S-GTE swap for 3g? That would have much greater potential IMHO. Is it an emissions thing that I am not aware of that's forcing this direction?

^ the other issue would be that the 3sgte is not a direct drop in like the 1mz... it can for sure be done, but youre going to have to do some fab work i would think. But youre right, 3k is too much for what he is talking about.

I think it's just mounts, but I could be wrong. 5S / 3S are the same family of motors. I am pretty sure it's a strait drop in for the Celica to do the swap, but I think the mounts are slightly different between the Celica 5S and Solara 5S. I could go out and look, but it's way to freaking cold and rainy. I know the 4A / 7A motors are drop in, at least in the late 80’s Corolla’s. I wish I had the cash available for a swap on the Solara, that car is just too heavy for the 5S’s paltry output. Heh, wish I had the $1200 cdn for that car. I could slap that bad boy into the Celica. That would be a significant upgrade in that little car.
