Hello Guyz!
I recently purchased a used 99 solara v6 with 140,000 mi. I love the car but have to fix few problems. My car has been giving very very low mpg like most it does in city is 15 mpg not an inch more. I can smell gas while driving or when i park my car and walk out. Check Engine light was on when i bought it.
1> Autozone read these codes from my car.
P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0302 Cylinder #2 — Misfire Detected
P0304 Cylinder #4 — Misfire Detected
P0306 Cylinder #6 — Misfire Detected
P0171 System Too Lean (Bank #1)

what causing these problems? O2 sensor? which one, since there are three?
should i get this fixed from dealer cuz if it burns out, i might have warranty?
Would my gas mileage improve? plz help i need to get this fixed immediately.

2> my passenger seat rocks/vibrates loud, is there a fix to it? i cus i noticed many memebers in this forum have ran into it but i couldn't find any post with a fix.

solaraguy has been very helpful so far. plz help guys. many thanks in advance.

1. Wipe the codes, see if they come back. Might just be an oddball thing. Always best to check before spending money. Sounds like bad combustion to me. Misfire in half the motor. I am not sure on the V6 firing order, but I would bet that’s all the same side. Check the plugs on the side with the problem and look for signs as to what the problem is. I would bet that Bank 1 is a certain O2 sensor (probably on the manifold that corresponds to the misfire). Sorry, I can’t give you much more on the 1MZ, as I only have one, and it’s in an OBD1 car :(.

2. I stuffed some carpet remnants in the underside of mine. That made it better.

...i think that bank 1 is the rear bank (near the firewall), which would be cylinders 1, 3, and 5...

making cylinders 2, 4, and 6 the ones near the radiator. i may be mistaken, but you might want to double check that fact.

if you upgraded you plugs/wires recently, check that everything is connected properly. if not that, then possibly the coils.

good luck

When you look at the plugs, make sure they’re in good shape. Maybe somebody didn’t do a tune up at 120k, you never know. That’s the crappy thing about used cars. You never know what’s been done. Whenever I buy a car I do all the fluids, and a tune up right away just so I know it was done. Then I inspect the whole deal checking things like belts, pulleys, brakes, bushings, alignment and such. I am pretty anal though, since I do this for a living.

my friend's v6 has similar symptom, and it turn out to be a vacuum leak somewhere on the intake, between the throttle bottle to the intake plenum gasket area. and the car also idle rough like dying, because too much air leak into the engine, and giving random mis-fire codes. after he replace those gaskets and the problem went away.
