Power Brake Booster

Power Brake Booster

Postby kaarona1 » Mon Oct 08, 2007 8:38 am

Has anyone had to replace their power brake booster (off of the vacuume line)? I was just quoted $750 from a very reputable friend of mine who owns a shop. I found a remanufactured piece for $200 at

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/produ ... ke_booster

Just courious if anyone has had to do this. The symptoms were a hissing noise when I brake, even when i push the brakes while I am stopped. Sounds like leaking air.

Anyone? Thanks

yeah, sounds liek teh booster is gone...

as for the oem price...it's in the range of 600 or so if I remember correctyl...

a remanufactered one would be a very good alternative if not one from a junkyard- they hardly go out, so even one with mileage on it usually isn't a problem

I actually had the same problem a few months back and it was annoying the hell out of me. I have a friend that owns a shop and he checked it out for me, turned out there was nothing wrong with the booster itself it was the gasket that's between the booster and the master cylinder. The stock gasket is made out of a paper like material and only cost about $2.00 at my local dealer. We decided to make our own by using the old one as a template and cutting a new one out of head gasket material. I have not had any more hissing or any other problem since then and that was about 6 months ago.
So before you go out and buy a new booster get a second opionion because that is a very expensive part and I am pretty sure it's the same problem I had. Good luck, let me know how it turns out.

Where is the paper gasket located between the booster and the master cylinder? Near the booster or near the master cylinder? Thanks!

I'm sorry I just remembered it was the gasket behind the fluid container. If you remove the container you will see the paper gasket on there.

Well I finally found this "paper filter" and it was all dried out. I spent $1.50 on a piece of gasket material and cut out a new gasket to replace and the hissing is gone! I would recommend that anyone with similar problems try this before replacing a $400 vaccum booster!

No it didn't, be careful. The gasket is just a dirt/moisture seal, the front seal on your booster must be leaking for vacuum to reach the paper gasket. This means the back of your master cylinder is now exposed to engine vacuum and any leak of brake fluid will be drawn right into your booster.

HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS? I had a hiss (and normal braking) and was going to replace the paper gasket too but when I removed the master and saw the corrosion I had no choice. At 58K miles, this corrosion should not have happened. I noticed that the new master has a large cone-shaped black rubber seal around the flange that the original factory master was missing. I can't believe TOYOTA would leave such an important part out, leading to premature failure of expensive brake parts. Replacing booster and master was not difficult on my 2000 4-cyl, just be sure to adjust the booster pushrod properly (see Haynes).ImageImage

you know what is weird, i had the same problem and the new booster and master didn't come with one of these gaskets and i called my local part store and they said there is no such thing.

I had the same problem as md but i did have the gasket, this seems like a problem part on our cars :-?
