My Solara carputer

Postby Fenix » Mon Jun 30, 2003 12:37 pm

EPIA mobo 800MHz, 256 MB, 30 gig, slim-CD-rom, 7 inches monitor, Gyration wireless keyboard & 3D mouse, I-tuner micro power supply, custom power+reset button+LED lights, window XP professional, wireless network and 2000+ songs. :-)

It's very quite and powerful.

Coming soon: In-dash DVD player, GPS and repaint the monitor. Maybe relocate the PC to custom case and place under passenger seat.

The power of DIY. :D

Please drop some suggestion to help me improve my carputer project.

Thanks for dropping by, all.

Blaze, running WinXP is the bad thing? hehehe, well, I'm not really good at Linux anyway.

Happy_Aggies,

What am I gonna do with the computer?

The sky's the limit, sir. Playing music, DVD for my guests, navigation system, playing game, testing audio system, checking email, browsing the net (I hate the small monitor though)...so on and so forth.

*Charinee*
Thanks. The project is quite long for me (like 3 months of planning, selecting parts, buying, bidding on ebay, putting them together with lots of custom things to do..) It wasn't that difficult, just the first time doing it was kinda hard to figure out things.
However, it's really fun and satisfying. I really like it.
If you like to do the same project, I'd love to show you step by step.

Btw, I like your car a lot (the color is great).

Very hot. I like the custom work. Do you actually use it?

I think for a car XP is better suited because chances are you will use it for multimedia and thats where XP has the edge over 2k.

Thanks for the kind words, all.

Blaze, I have win2k but prefer XP for this carputer. It loaded faster for me.

Cruze105,

I just used the slim laptop CD-rom I bought from Ebay ($16 shipped, :) ). Besides that, nothing from the laptop. It's all PC parts. My power supply is 120Watts.

Krazee1707, I take that as the compliment.

Yanks0114,
Yes, I use it but only at night time. It's mainly for music. Daily drive, I just pop the cd in my Kenwood mp3 CD player. In the future, I might use it more for GPS.

Missay,
I'll keep my eyes on the road.

Here is the bare picture of the PC before I wire it

Hmmh... still not understand, since laptop will do the same thing.

Abt music, there is some player that can take AV input,
also laptop has bigger screen.

But I do admire ur hard work tho, I know it's a lot of work to get it done.

You're right Blaze, but cmon the XP idea is just like WinMe for Win98, but way better right?

Fenix, you got it made! That's pretty smart rather than installing big stereo system that doesnt do much except play clearer and louder. IMO, big f'n deal. For the money, yours is more practical and intelligent. Kudos dude!

I might play up something like yours in the near future. Probably when I get a new laptop, then I could use my big-ass Inspiron 8200 as my carputer component. Anyone know of a good HUD (heads up display) module that could be used for a car's windshield? That's would be really awesome :)

Very cool. I admire your work. Take a look at my far less sophistocated carputer installation.
