Where to find low brass fitting for SC with strut bar

Postby shidosha01 » Mon Jun 02, 2003 9:14 pm

Hey guys...i was able to find a brass fitting for my boost gauge but the things that annoys me is that I have to install washers around the studs for the strut bar. I noticed some of you guys were able to get a low brass fitting without having to raise the strut bar. Where did you guys get the low brass fitting? Very interested in buying it.

I hate the rattling sound it makes whenever I drive slow or go in reverse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i have 2 added washers, 3 in total under the strut bar. these flat boost taps were custom fabricated a long time ago by some guy in Newport beach. he only made a select few.

i also hit that bar in reverse, 1st and sometimes 2nd. i picked up a 90 brass fit elbow from a hardware shop. works better... but still rubs the bar.

I'll post pics of what I did but basically since the bar is hollow on the inside, I took it off and used a dremel to cut the bottom part where the boost gauge fitting would hit. I don't have it hooked up yet because I'm waiting for the A pillar to be painted but it should have a ton of clearance.

Thanks...I'm curious to see how much to cut off the strut bar without really affecting its performance. By the way nice car Yanks!

Thanks for the compliment. The TRD strut tower brace really isn't there for performance, its there because it needed more clearance to fit around the SC than the stock one. The cut did not compromise any of the strength of the bar. I'm not the least bit worried that it will hold up

ok, this is vague for me right now since i don't have the s/c (yet) and can't just go out to my car to see what all of you are talking about. however, i am interested since my s/c is on the way and i'll be doing the install in a couple weeks. can one of you please explain why the strut bar won't fit and what has to be done to correct this? thanks

Here's what i did

Postby RayCarlo » Wed Jun 04, 2003 5:39 am

What i did was take my 90 degree brass fitting and used my dremel with a heavy duty cutting bit(thanks rizal) and shortened the threaded part that turns into the supercharger by grinding away some of it making sure that it was still able to be threaded into the supercharger, then i took the dremel and grinded a bit of the moresolid part of the elbow (the part that would rest against the supercharger if turned completely into the supercharger) the square part, i kind of continued along the same lines as the threaded part but a little smaller in diameter since i couldn't have the threading so it was still able to fit into the hole of the supercharger when you turn it, being careful not to make any holes, i then also took a little bit of what would be hitting the strut bar when the fitting is in the supercharger. I'm sure i could have made it a little smaller, but i didn't want to run the chance of messing up the fitting, maybe i'll buy another fitting this weekend and try and make it as low as i can.

I hope this makes sense and helps.

Hey no problem Ray I'm glad it worked out for you. Maybe I'll buy some extra 90 degree elbows for us today from Fairfax auto parts and we'll tinker with the brass fittings. The part was like 2 bucks each.

For DavPak...the TRD strut bar will fit perfect over your supercharger. The only problem is...if you plan on installing a boost gauge, you have to tap into the vaccum pressure area of the supercharger. LOL...and it happens to sit right underneath the TRD strut bar. Those of us who did tap into it have had to raise the TRD strut bar by putting washers around the studs the strut bar mounts to. This will all make sense when you see it on your car. Congratulations on the supercharger by the way.

After about an hour worth of work Ray and I were able to fit a smaller brass fitting without it hitting the bar! NO MORE RATTLING sound. However...we still had to put 2 washers on the stud closest to the engine bay. But hey...its a lot better then putting 4 to 5 washers. I'll be putting up pics of Ray's install soon. The brass fitting part size is : 1/8 thread male/female combo 69X2. Hope that made sense.

Did you ever get any pics of the install? I just got my gauge pod and wanted to use the 90 degree fitting.
Thanks-

All you guy don't need the brass fitting, you can hook up through a vacume line that comes out under the black plastic shield. That's what I did and it works perfect. All you have to do is cut the vacume line that connects from the top of the manifold to a 2x2 little black box under you throttle body, the hose is no longer than 5inches. just T tap into that and your done. I'll try to get some pics.
