High Idle

High Idle

Postby Jakecallun20 » Mon Oct 15, 2007 8:35 pm

Anyone have this problem? I start my engine and it jumps up to 2000 and then sits pretty at 1850..... but when I put it in gear it leaps down to 900-1kish. Is this normal? Anything I could adjust to make it idle lower at around 1100ish (avg idle rate right?) Thanks. Any help is appreciated.

Yeah, it's just a substitute for heated catalytic converters (e.g. the kind where there's a heating element integrated into it, but no there's none available and a waste of money to actually get it), since it is only effective when warmed up. Same thing happens to me.

on really cold days the rpm is a bit higher when I start the lara.

I lived in FL for 10 years so far and I feel like I am in summer season the whole time, hahahha.

I didn't know its already cold elsewhere.

Jake,

High idle is normal when an engine is cold but 2000 is a bit high.

Something to check (especially if you're at fairly high mileage and have never done it). Take a look inside the throttle body. Open the butterfly manually and with a flashlight look for a ring of carbon where the butterfly contacts the bore.

If you see carbon, clean it out with (your choice) a toothbrush or Q-Tip and any kind of spray carb or FI cleaner.

What frequently happens is that carbon ring (that should be part of the regular maintenance schedule but isn't) can hold the butterfly open just a bit so the cold idle valve can't do its job.

Your rpm falls back to around 1000 just because the transmission is sucking off enough power to force the rpm lower.

Anyway, check the throttle body, clean it and see if that fixes your problem.

Cheers

Alright, I'll do that thanks. I have never done that before so that will probably help. Mileage is 139151.
