Tire PSI! Inflation question

Just got back from Discount Tire, had the tires rotated, checked balance and inflation. The guy said that for the long trip (I have about 2000 trip coming up at 5am) 35 PSI in the tires would be good and increase gas mileage.

Any one know about that? I don't want uneven wear in the tires. Will this hurt anything? I had him go ahead and put in 35 PSI.

I don't plan on going over 80mph on this entire trip so I don't know if that makes any difference.

I leave in the morning. If anyone can offer any information about this before then, that would be very helpful

The tires are Goodyear Eagle RSA 235/45/18.

I run 36 psi in my tires...so far I've had good results. The factory tires didn't fare to well...only 30k...but the replacements got a little over 62K on them. The ride is a little harder but not to the point that it is unpleasant. Biggest thing is to keep a check on the tire wear and make adjustments as needed. I rotate my tires every other oil change...about 6k miles.

Well if anything it adds a bit of mileage due to the larger diameter to reduce the amount of times the wheels spin, which hypermilers use all the time. Also it's a proverbial "overclocking" for the wheels to add more to the speed rating (e.g. if the tires are rated for 120 you can add x amount of PSI and have it able to support 130), but the only tradeoff being it'll support less weight.

However, 3PSI shouldn't make a huge difference, but adding an adverse amount will promote uneven tire wear where the center wears faster than the edges... And having 'chicken strips' on a car doesn't impress anybody .

Don't go 35 PSI, the tires will wear out in the center faster. This happened to my Solara (rides on 16" wheels and tires), so now I go 32 PSI at most.
